20 foreign resident spots available in Shimanami Kaido’s biggest cycling event until August 31

On October 30, 7,000 riders from all over the world will take part in the Cycling Shimanami 2022 bike event when the Shimanami Kaido’s biggest cycling event returns for the first time in four years. General entry is closed, but 20 places on the signature 70km Onomichi to Imabari course have been made available for foreign residents of Japan.

The Shimanami Kaido is Japan’s most famous cycle destination. CNN included the route, known for its impressive bridges that allow cyclists to island-hop across the Inland Sea to Shikoku, in its list of the world’s top bike rides, commenting on its scenic beauty and suitability for cyclists of all abilities.

Hiroshima prefectural government is working with JTB to provide 20 foreign residents with a memorable way to tick the Shimanami Kaido off their Japan bucket lists.

You can choose from a one-night or two-night stay at the New Castle Hotel in Fukuyama, a short walk from Fukuyama Station and the city’s castle which reopens at the end of August after extensive renovations. As well as guaranteed entry into the popular Onomichi to Imabari 70km course, the package includes transport to and from the start and finish. Transportation for your own bike can be arranged and cross-bikes and e-bikes can be rentals to use in the event if you prefer to travel light.

Those concerned about how the COVID situation may develop, can rest assured that cancellations can be made free of charge until the end of September.

A little bit of secret info, so keep this under your hats… If you have any Japanese friends who would like to join, there is a provision in the small print for one Japanese national per international resident to also join a group booking. Could be a nice way to help out a friend who didn’t make it through the general entry lottery.

Booking in English, Chinese and Japanese available.

Sounds nice but crowded.

From reading the article, my understandig is that the 7000 spaces are presumably available to anybody and are allocated by lottery. 20 more spaces just for foreign residents have been made available in addition to this.
