According to the latest data from STR, a company that tracks supply and demand data for multiple market sectors, including the global hotel industry, there were 1,892 hotel projects in Asia Pacific's hotel pipeline in April 2019, accounting for 423,343 rooms under construction.
This represents a 23.3% year-on-year increase in the number of rooms in the final phase of the development pipeline.
A majority of the region’s hotel rooms under construction are in three segments. Of those three, upper midscale projects represented the largest percentage increase (+41.9%) in activity year-on-year.
- Upscale: 109,689 rooms (+12.3%)
- Upper Midscale: 99,013 rooms (+41.9%)
- Upper Upscale: 95,915 rooms (+17.6%)
Five countries reported more than 20,000 rooms under construction. China led with 225,170 rooms, or 8.8% of the country’s existing supply, followed by Japan with 39,864 hotel rooms, or 6.1% of existing supply.
