I ran my pre-DPF Volkswagen group diesels on 100% recycled restaurant oil for a few years. As the article says, though, we're not frying enough to make it a sustainable replacement. Whatever happened to algae as a potential fuel?

I read that too then I think about that massive grease clog in London that is hundreds of meters long and can't help thinking there are opportunities there. lol. A lot of potential fuel goes down the drain and clogs our sewers. I worked briefly for LA County Sanitation Districts and saw them with my own eyes.

This is a great Proof of Concept !
It might not be the chosen fuel eventually but it shows the air industry is ready for the ecologic challenges.
While some claim train can replace any air line, i prefer planes for the non destructive (and definitive) impact on soil and animal habitats.

The US Navy has operated F/A-18s on 100% biofuels, the so-called Green Hornet program to see if biofuels could be an alternative fuel source in a national emergency. The US Navy has also operated gas turbine powered ships on biofuels for the same reason. Jet engines are surprisingly tolerant of different fuels. The old UH-1 Huey helicopter would run happily on several grades of jet fuel, diesel fuel and even heating oil, which after all is primarily kerosene like jet fuel. The old SH-3 Sea King had an adjustment on each engine for different fuels, mainly because shipboard fuels had much lower volatility (and a higher price) than the fuels burned by land based aircraft. We had to be able to switch between both but the Jet-A/JP-4 setting would let you get away with running stuff like heating oil in a pinch.
