ANA to raise int'l fuel surcharge for Aug–Sept

ANA has applied to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to raise its fuel surcharge on international flights from Aug 1. The fuel surcharge is fixed for a period of two months, after which it is revised on the basis of the average market price of Singapore kerosene for the two months previous to the date of application for revision.

Jet fuel rose to an average of $91.71 per barrel from April 2010 to May 2010, and ANA regrets that it must ask its valued customers to once again share the increased cost burden, in spite of ongoing efforts to curb costs and increase revenues.

The surcharge level per ticket will be 14,000 yen to Europe, the Middle East and North America, 8,500 yen to Hawaii and India, and around 6,500 yen to the rest of Asia.

What has "average market price of Singapore kerosene" got to do with ANA fuel surcharge? It is worlds apart in distance & dollars(or yen).

No surcharge on domestic flights though: they must run on a different type of fuel.

Flights out of Japan in August are already horrendously expensive. I am using my miles to fly to Singapore for free, from where I can get a much cheaper flight to Europe.

One would think the cost of fuel is the same regardless of destination - at least it is in my car. Unless, of course, you want to gouge people at peak travel month(s), and, of course, do it 'regrettably.'

People will either pay it or they won't. I won't.

8,500 yen to Hawaii and India, and around 6,500 yen to the rest of Asia.

Does this mean that if I fly to Korea from western Japan, I still have to pay 8,500 yen? That's 50% of the basic fare!

Agree with Sarge - I'll pass. Let these company go more into the red. This is just another excuse to rip-off customers.

I'm interested: Know of any cheap travel agents in Singapore?

Ok, I will stay away from ANA!

nothereillegal: Just using the airline web sites you can find much cheaper deals from Singapore.

For example: BA quotes Y177220 for a return flight from Narita to London, leaving at the end of August and returning in September.

On the same dates, it costs Y90675 from Singapore to London (on BA), a saving of Y86545. So for the three of us we can save about Y260000, but you need the miles to get the free flights to Singapore, otherwise you won't save much.
