The two most uncomfortable flights in my entire life were both aboard Delta. American rednecks who operate airlines should stick to regional hops of 2-3 hours max. They are completely out of their league on trans-Pacific flights.

JAL service will go down and Delta's will come up as they meet in the middle we'll all suffer with the terrible result of bad service on JAL. Delta? Who could ever team up with such a low quality airline?

Peak Oil and Global Recession force airlines into a corner, and it won't end. I think it will go like this; Worldwide, first we'll see airlines merge to save any administration and operations costs since fuel costs don't diminish and tickets suck due to recession. Next, after that phase has run its course will be demands for nationalization or even a global merger funded by nations, as oil continues its climb higher making costs and profits impossible for a normal business. The need of airlines will be more important. After that, there will be no further domestic flights any more in order to save fuel for only over seas and oceans. Japan and Europe have trains at least. Then it'll go like the Concorde at that point.

Why all the fuss? 6% drop in oil per year, thus forced reductions. Rearrange the deck chairs around the titanic all you want, but nature bats last.

I always hoped they would merge with ANA and just add L to the new name. All Nippon Air Lines.

I wonder what would happen to their good service standards levels?

linking up with air france klm, I wouldn't be too worried ( although don't copy the air france ground staff attitude)

delta worries me about service.

Generally the further west you go the worse airline service you will get.

As long they dont touch my airmiles I will be happy.

This isn't a case of barbarians at the gate, they are already in the courtyard.

JAL, an airline with a overly high opinion of itself and its flight crews (you must remember that a couple of JAL accidents were caused by a pyscho pilot and a pxssed pilot) never demeaned itself by joining one of the airline alliances. Now with this move to hook up with Delta, it seems that the once mighty have been reduced to rummaging through the bargain bin.

For decades JAL profited from a protected market and allowed amakudari officials from the Ministry of Transport to feed off its earnings. It doesn't have the faintest idea of how to compete, and even if it did it would be dragged down by all the parasites that have been sucking its blood all these years. Better to let it die and establish a new company, managed by competent professionals, with no ties to politics, the bureaucracy and (yes!) the yakuza.

I will be avoiding JAL even more if this goes ahead. US operated airlines are generally rubbish, Delta being one of the worst. JAL will no doubt become as bad as them as a result.

If global economy is about to pick up, this would be a very smart move by delta to get a foothold on haneda for a relatively small investment. But if things continue to stagnate for another few years, perhaps stirfry's comment applies.

Sounds to me like the inflight food quality as well as flight attendant looks are about to go from bad to worse.

No don't do it! They need to learn their lesson and make their rates more competitive. If you are not punished sometime then you will never learn anything.
