$10000 is a nice sum to have, it would be like a lottery win. It might even make more people fly with Delta in the hope of hitting the jackpot.

The old saying is true: Everyone has their price. If only United had thought of this.

Is this $9950 plus a refund on the ticket? Or does the passenger eat the ticket cost?

Why not overbook in the first place? If staff need to fly use a cargo flight? They have enough seats for a flight crew if they have to be somewhere. Unseating paying passengers should NEVER be an option.

Overbooking in hotels is very common as well.
"Potentially offering a $10K carrot to a customer isn't fixing the problem that was created in the first place by the seller."
Oh it will fix the problem for more than enough people to be able to handle any overbookings. The odds of them even having to pay out that much are pretty limited. All they have to do is $100 increments. "Who's willing to miss this flight for $1000? $1100? $1200?
I'd bet they rarely go above $2000.
"Also, I wouldn't be surprised if this customer "compensation" isn't somehow loaded with a ton of restrictions that's heavily skewed towards Delta's favor."
That's a definite possibility.
