Domestic airlines unify rules for size of carry-on bags

Or pack that crap in your luggage, and carry on only a small bag to hold personal electronic devices, various papers such as tickets/directions/passports, and anything that you might munch on or drink. I never understood why people thought it was a good idea to pack all their shit into the largest possible "carry on sized" bag and spend 10 minutes trying to cram it into the overhead.

Good, I hope it is enforced. I'm tired of these selfish idiots who bring these huge cases into the cabin and then either 1)take up all the overhead lockers space so no-one else can put their stuff in, or 2)move other peoples stuff or worse squash/damage other peoples stuff to cram their huge bags in.

It wasn't enforced before and won't be now. If you worked at a check in counter and had the choice of arguing the toss with every other passenger all day, every day, or just letting them go with whatever they are carrying, what would you do?

Lost baggage/ damaged luggage and the cost of excess baggage is the reason people cram everything into their carry-ons. A laptop, camera, book and and some business-related material can easily top 10 kg.

However, this is not the sole cause of problems with stowing luggage. The plethora of food and souvenir shops air-side also contribute to the mass of luggage in a plane cabin, as Sato-san and Watanabe-kun load up with omiyage for the department, relatives and family.

Money can not buy civilazation.There is rule in Airlines how much should be hand carry weight but people just ignore it.They must charge.

Carry on and computers are separate items. Computers do not count as carry on. Personally, it is the way they load planes with zones that mess everything up. Window seats should go in first, then middle seats, and aisle seats last. I hate it when I have to put my carry on way in the back, but my seat is way in the front. Some dude tried to take my bag out once and put his in and carry mine to the back. Almost had a fight. I won. And all those souvenirs collected by JP people should be checked in. They buy so much crap.

They will run the carry on bag through the size checker and say 'ok no problem'.....but they wont say anything about the 24 duty free bags the passenger is carrying in their other hand!!!!!

I was warned beforehand in November that my half-empty backpack would not be allowed in December. I can agree with the rule when we're talking about a big piece of luggage, but an half-empty backpack?!?! Screw domestic flights, I'm sticking with the shinkansen, much less hassle.

What is fine on an international flight is banned on domestic routes? Those of us who pack ceramics, glass, etc. in our hand luggage are being penalized. Either pay 10,000 yen to take it on board.... or risk it being broken.... or send it via Japan Post, which costs a fortune to send to the US. This will end when someone blows up at the "security officer".

This happened to me. I bought a bag specifically because it was valid as carry-on on all airlines. Then I found out that it is a smidge too big for domestic planes. What a disappointment.

I very much recommend bags that fit EXACTLY into the overhead compartment. There is no wedging or shuffling by other passengers.

And when is the "does a purse count as a carry-on bag?" controversy going to start on this thread? Specifically, why do women effectively THREE carry-on pieces when men get only TWO?
