JAL expands codeshare with Jetstar on Kansai-Cairns route

Japan Airlines (JAL) will expand its codeshare agreement with Jetstar Airways from April 1, when JAL will place its JL indicator on JQ-operated flights between Osaka (Kansai) and Cairns - a once-daily service commencing the same day.

JAL and Jetstar have been bilateral partners since May 2007 and currently codeshare on flights operated by the latter between Narita and Cairns. Fares issued by JAL for JQ-operated codeshare flights will be for economy class only, inclusive of meals and soft drinks. Alcoholic drinks and additional refreshments will be available for purchase onboard.

JAL currently operates one daily flight between Narita and Brisbane, and one daily flight on the Narita-Sydney route on which the airline's Shell Flat seat in business class and Sky Shell seat in premium economy, are available.

I wonder how much extra JAL charge for the food. Jetstar charge Y2000-3000, but it isn't worth that.

JAL is still flying? I was hunting round for tickets yesterday in the UK and operators here will not book JAL or BA at the moment. And JAL did not even show up in my expedia search.

We had a great flight to the Gold Coast last year on Jetstar - much better than our JAL flight to Cairns a few years before. I don't think JAL customers will be too unhappy if they are flying on Jetstar planes. The JAL customers we saw on our flight were all getting served first and their more expensive ticket price included food etc.

It takes 'courage' for a flag carrier to codeshare with a budget airline. Unless JAL is going low-cost themselves.

'Cause Jetstar is Qantas's cut price brand. JAL has fallen along way if it is codesharing on these flights, it would be akin to codesharing on SWest in the US.

Good business move, but it will be a shock for some of JAL's regulars.

Like they say, good news is rarely reported on.
