I hate this term as it implies that the employee did something wrong to end the relationship. It would be better to either use the terms laid-off or better still retrenched which accurately confer that the employee lost their position through lack of available work, or cost-cutting measures.
Good luck to them all. This is a terrible time to be looking for work,
