There’s definitely an appeal to living in one of Japan’s bustling big cities. However, there’s also an undeniable appeal to the more relaxed daily life in the country’s smaller towns, especially one near the coast with nearby beaches, surf spots and fresh local seafood.

So if that sounds like the ideal accommodation for you, you’ll be happy to hear about Hobimo, a new house rental service that recently launched in Japan focusing on properties in seaside towns.

Hobimo currently offers rentals in Chiba, Shizuoka, Yamagata, Hyogo, Kochi, and Miyazaki Prefectures, and is looking to add locations in Kanagawa and Tokushima soon. The homes aren’t super fancy, but their cozy, rustic vibe should mesh well with the laid-back lifestyle of the communities in which they’re found.

But the most amazing thing is the cost. Each property can be used for up to 30 days at a cost of just 40,000 yen, which includes utilities. Add in the fact that you’re allowed to share the rental with one other person, and the per-person price drops to just 20,000 yen for each of you if you’ve got a travel companion.

Applications for the monitor program can be made online here, while a complete list of currently available properties can be found here.

Yeah, amazing until you actually check the details.

The 40,000 is the monthly subscription fee (3 month minimum)

And no, you can not stay for 30 days in the same location (this article is wrong to say "Each property can be used up to 30 days".) The max is actually 15 days at any one place, but it is awkwardly explained and goes on to say the max may be only 5 days (when trying to reserve a couple places it did indeed only offer up to 5 days on the booking calendar)

Oh, and there are only 13 locations currently available across the country. So once a few dozen people join, booking anywhere may be a little tricky, especially when everyone is trying to justify their monthly subscription fee.

That would mean in the worst case, you have to move into the same accommodations (not all look like houses lol) multiple times, as 5 days by only 13 possibilities is 65, but the subscription is for three months. And that wild hopping costs you ¥120,000 then. Very funny…not

Sounds good, if true.

Getting an old place like these out in the boonies doesn't cost much more than ¥40,000 a month anyway.

Or rather, sounds too good to be true.
