At least I won't have to leave tips for the chambermaid out fear of being robbed.

I was about to post about not leaving tips also, like the comment above. When I went to the States alone last month, it was a joy not having anyone knock on the door asking about room cleaning service. I think 2 to 3 days using the same sheets, towels, etc, is quite reasonable for a single traveler such as in my case. It was also nice to just be able to put the sign on the door when I didn't need the service. However, each case or trip is different so I'll have to see how it goes on future trips.

Agree with you both - even when you leave a "Don't Disturb" tag on the door, room service often politely knock and ask if they can do something.
I'll hang a "Totally Damn Well Disturb" tag on my door from no on, and get some peace.

This is risking public serious health issues and further illustrates the continuing decline of living standards in the U.S..

Well I usually will refuse housekeeping for around three days, but I expect to have a refreshed "amenities" set and six days is simply too long for a hotel.

Imagine the laughter in the halls of hotel industry marketing departments when another marketing weenie comes up phrases like, “Because we care about you, we’re no longer providing cleaning services.”
Or, “To make your stay more pleasant, we’re increasing the price of bottled water to $8.95.”
Or, “To help save the planet and be responsible citizens, we ask you to wash your own sheets and towels in the coin laundry down the hall.”

They are borrowing right from the Orwellian military playbook with terms like collateral damage, friendly fire Enhanced interrogation techniques, Extraordinary rendition, overseas contingency operations , etcetc....
Doublespeak is the new marketing singlespeak

In the US, many of the hotel service employees are hispanic immigrants who went back home during the pandemic. It will take time before they decide to come back. Seems to me that most American citizens don't want to do jobs where they might get their hands dirty.
