Qantas resumes Narita flights

Qantas on Wednesday resumed direct services between Australia and Narita. Qantas has been working closely with the Australian government, as well as industry and health experts including the International Air Transport Association, International Civil Aviation Organization, Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency and World Health Organization to monitor the situation in Japan, said Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce. "Together with the advice of these authorities and our own assessments, Qantas is now satisfied that infrastructure services have returned to normal in Tokyo and our crew will now be able to undertake appropriate rest breaks."

Since mid-March, Qantas had been flying from Sydney to Hong Kong, and then onto Narita flight and back again, so the crew wouldn't have to remain in Tokyo.

Qantas currently flies daily from Sydney to Tokyo and three times per week from Perth to Tokyo. The Perth-Tokyo services will be suspended from May 10.

Still the safest airline in the world and the only one never to have had a death on board due to an accident.....

So based on the advice of a number of scientific experts, the airline has been restricting its exposure to Narita for human health reasons? What is the implication for us chumps who have been in the Kanto region all along?

I guess asking all these authorities and institutions for their advice is the main reason it took them so long, not to mention that all those experts and "experts" are fully booked into the TV. But I am more surprised that they let this be news instead of silently changing the flight plan back to its original scedule. Goes to show how serious the situation around Narita must have been!

Qantas should shut down their services, not sure why people have forgotten their planes had issues in mid-flight, holes bursting open and other things, google it..

I with they would restore/resurrect direct flights from Melbourne. These have not been available since long before the earthquake for some reason.

They returned to normal in Tokyo close to a month ago.
