Saigon?? What century are you living in?

So you think you know more than the local people there? You think you know all the nuances related to the traditional name "Saigon" that still lives on and will live on?  I have traveled to Saigon several times and talked to numerous Saigon people, so I'm afraid that you seem to know what you don't really know about.

The three letter designation for the international airport at Ho Chi Minh City is still SGN (Saigon).

Just flew there year ago.

Correction: Each leg jumped from 5600yen to about 13,500yen. The total for both legs, instead of being a little over 10,000yen was 26,210yen. But still, huge jumps in price unlike I've seen before!

It is still most definitely called Saigon by the Vietnamese. But a news headline should probably use Ho Chi Minh.

Although Ho Chi Minh City (often shortened to HCMC, HCM, or HCMc in writing) is the new official name of the city, Saigon is still used daily by many Vietnamese — particularly in the south. Despite official mandates, the label "Saigon" is shorter and is used more often in daily speech. Seems locals from the south continue to call the city Saigon. Yes I agree Strange from outside of the country the p.c. would be Ho Chi Men. Unless you were from the area living abroad. Personally never met a Vietnamese in my part neck of the woods in Japan. However I am luck to see any foreigner where I live. Until I get into the city.

Auto correction went batty on me again. Repost.

I had a look for their cheap promotional fares last month. They showed up at like 5600yen/leg until the final booking page when all the taxes etc are added (used to that with other LCCs), HOWEVER...

Instead of just taxes there was a huge addition I've never seen before. The promotional price was listed in English as "Fare" and there was another "Charge" that was more than twice that price. Then taxes and airport fees on top. What initially looked like 5600yen each way was actually 26,210yen each way! That's a jump I've never seen before! On the Japanese site they were listed as "Chiketto-dai" and "Ryokin".

Anyway, I booked a different flight with them just last week from Kaohsiung to Hanoi. Shall see how they are then and probably use them again from Osaka. Even with their weird payment structure, they're significantly cheaper than anyone else!

I had no idea until now that it had been renamed Ho Chi Minh, so putting Saigon in parenthesis for dumb people like me was probably a good idea.

Even among the Vietnamese, VietJet has a bad reputation. One guy on a forum says he takes it routinely and not once has it left on time. A friend said her flight was 3 hours late.

These new flights are probably to serve the multitude of Vietnamese students and "interns" in Japan currently.
