The right thing for Fiji to do. A closed border strategy for countries is not sustainable.

Tourist income is vital for the Fijian economy.

Took a cruise to Alaska a few weeks ago. The cruise line required 100% of the crew and passengers to be vaccinated, and required a negative covid test for each passenger. Everything went fine on the ship, but the ICUs in Alaska are currently overwhelmed. The plan for Fiji bears some similarities, but waiting until 80% of the local population is fully vaccinated may not be good enough to prevent the delta variant from running amok through the unvaccinated. Because the delta variant is so extremely transmissible, a 90% goal of full vaccination may be needed in order to prevent the virus from overwhelming the ICUs.
