Mixed-gender bathing has a long and rich history in Japan, but it is also difficult to find English information on many of them because they are rather traditional. Fortunately, GaijinPot Travel and GaijinPot Blog have guides and listings of where to find a natural hot spring where men and women can bathe together.
Some places are mystical hot springs outside in caves or rivers, others are simply private baths you can rent out, which are certainly not your traditional mixed-gender onsen but do offer a more intimate onsen experience.
A common problem foreigners run into while in Japan is not knowing the endless cultural rules and taboos. If you stick your chopsticks into a bowl of rice you will see natives’ faces go white and the longer you stay here, the more you learn about these types of rules the hard way.
In particular, I have had many questions and concerns about konyoku onsen, or mixed-gender hot spring, bathing etiquette. Please read this Guide to Mixed Gender Onsen in Japanbefore going to any of the locations listed.
Listings by Region
- These are listed form northern Japan to southern Japan, introducing a collection of our GaijinPot Blog articles.
- They amount to more than 60 mixed-gender onsen and other places where men and women can bathe together in Japan.
Hokkaido
Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, is a popular travel destination for thrill seekers and foodies alike. The annual average of over 500 centimeters of snow makes the island a haven for skiers and snowboarders, while specialties such as fresh seafood and Sapporo-style tangy miso ramen bring hungry visitors from around the world. Whether you’re the adventurous type or the hungry type — or somewhere in between — spend some of your downtimes at one of Hokkaido’s konyoku onsen, or mixed-gender hot spring.

Mixed Onsen really? I mean if I were surrounded by naked ladies I would feel, you know, excited.... How do these mixed onsen work then??
Strangerland
It’s customary to cover yourself with a towel for decency in mixed onsen.

Anyone SEEKING a mixed gender onsen is obviously doing it with the thought of wanting to see others naked. If that's not the case, why not go to private onsen with you and your significant other.
Strangerland
And? You act like you've come up with some special revelation none of us wouldn't have realized.
Unfortunately however, most people who go with that in mind are going to be disappointed when they arrive and find that most visitors are... a little further ahead in age than they may have hoped.
Why? Maybe someone is fine with being seen naked, but doesn't particularly care whether or not they see others naked. If this is the case a mixed onsen will be fine.

Read the article again, particularly this part:

This is the first time I have seen 混浴 translated as "mixed gender bathing". Not saying it isn't common these days, just really the first time I have seen it written that way in English.
It has always been "mixed bathing", with an explanation to accompany it. But then again, its not like I read lots of English guides to onsen these days.
Anyway, its sort of weird to me the idea of actively seeking out a konyoku onsen. Rather, it is more a matter of seeking out good onsen, with some of them being konyoku or having a konyoku bath.
There are so many awesome ones in Japan, even close to Tokyo. There is one in Izu on the way to Shimoda that is right on the ocean and has amazing views!!
And as long as you know that it is about enjoying the onsen and being discrete in covering yourself, its not the "titillating" thing many may imagine.

Mixed onsen = Public Swimming pool without the space to swim. So don't get your expectations higher than that...

By making sure voyeurs and other miscreants are kept out.
There's nothing exciting or sexual about mixed bathing or nudism. Most people realise this when they grow up.
Strangerland
Then there'd be no one left to go in! I think anyone going to a mixed onsen has either a littler voyeurism or exhibitionism in them.
Or maybe I'm just projecting.

Pfft! Not gunna happen. Imma give an eyeful, because I plan on getting an eyeful.

Doesnt work that way. Several years ago, I scaled an access ladder at the hot springs at Suzuka Curcuit, walked across the building roof and took a gander at the women's outdoor bathing area. Point is: people who want to look will do so regardless if it being a mixed bath or not.

Peeping toms usually get caught, so hopefully bathers will remain safe from your unwarranted attentions.

Mixed-sex nude bathing is very common in parts of Europe, such as Germany. Naturism is a thing practiced in many countries and it does not mean that it is voyeuristic.
Bugle Boy of Company B
Because: Sometimes you want to go with your SO and not pay a small fortune for a private bath, or you go in a group, or you go as a family, or you want to experience it, or it's on your bucket list.
The only obvious thing is you think everyone is perverted.
Toasted Heretic
Correct. But scaling a ladder and going out of the way to get a glimpse of female flesh to satisfy one's needs certainly is.
As is willfully ignoring etiquette (in order to see or be seen) especially if the establishment requires a modicum of modesty.
Thank you, Ah_so. It's extremely common, as you say, but perhaps not so much in the US & that's why nudity for some equals awkwardness, nervous jokes and a confusion over the er, nature, of naturism.

After you’ve seen a woman naked for a long time, they all look the same you don’t have to worry about anything, just focus on why yo are there in the first place and that’s to enjoy the soothing and natural healing minerals of the Onsen. If focusing becomes a challenge then my advice to any man is don’t go. Believe me when I tell you, the women are only going there to relax and nothing more. Follow the rules and and avoid the taboos you’ll be fine.
Bugle Boy of Company B
I know.
That's another issue, but in all honesty, I did it just to see if I could do it. There was no sexual gratification involved. Just a challenge.

Jesus, we may disagree on a lot of things, but we really, really disagree on this one.
Bugle Boy of Company B
This hardly seems the place to brag about exploits, but I have to disagree. First, the logic. Seeing A woman naked for a long time seems it would make you less excited as time goes on with that particular woman, but it certainly would not equate to all women looking the same. Quite the contrary! I think that one of the leading reasons for men to check out other women is because they DON'T look the same. They are bored with the one they've been seeing naked all the time.
So, going into a mixed bath, might be interesting - but in all honesty, I imagine it would be only mildly interesting the first time and hardly at all afterward - unless you happened upon a group of college girls who were also taking a bath after having had a few beers to help loosen their inhibitions.
And secondly, I've seen plenty of naked girls, and I still want to see more, so there you have it.

The beautiful ones don't go there, heheh
