Senegal were better players than the USA but England roared and the Lions took three goals with a great goal from Liverpool captain Henderson.

Quarterfinals. France and England are through.

This is the last 16. 8 games become four.

Coming home! Football is coming home!

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

The opening bid for Bellingham has to be over £100m.

This lad’s got plenty.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Really good performance from The Three Lions against the disappointing Lions of Teranga. Harry Kane is leading his hungry Lions cubs admirably and they sure did roar last night.

Pretty much all the English fans I know are supremely confident now of bringing the trophy home. Social media also. I would caution them though - France and Brazil are decent teams and will be no pushovers. I think The Three Lions have Les Bleus measure and will beat them very well - but I worry if they can match Seleção Canarinho at this stage.

I haven’t met one. I’ve met a few who think they have a shot.

I have found people say this to build up a false narrative of overconfidence and then enjoy the fall.

It’s extraordinarily childish.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

I’m not gonna call them the toothless lions anymore; that’s a start; England won. France won. England France. Everything’s normal. Excellent. Finally, let’s see what they can (really) do (against France). :)

1 ( +5 / -4 )

I'd advise to check your socials. You won't go 10 seconds without seeing the calls of "It's coming home" - from English fans. Perhaps some are being ironic, but most seem genuine. Nothing wrong with confidence if you have the team to back it up. They are allowed to dream, it's not childish.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Tough game against the WC holders France.

I am optimistic about England but that's it.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

I don’t trust what I read on social media. Loads of sock puppet accounts and trolls.

You strike me as someone who can spot adolescent trolling and sock puppet garbage.

I tend to go with people who I know and who understand football.

They think England have a shot. Most I know think France have too much for England. I’d go with that. Hard to see that England defence dealing with Mbappe who looks frightening.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Well I'm on England for the QF. Watching the France v Poland replay now, France are playing well but IMO England shaded them. Shutting down Mbappe as much as possible is key.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I've met literally no one who thinks England is going to win it. You made similar cousins after England's first match.

I'd advise to check your socials. You won't go 10 seconds without seeing the calls of "It's coming home" - from English fans. Perhaps some are being ironic,

It's not ironic nor meant literally. It is a cry of hope and the chorus of a popular football song. People know that the top teams will be very hard to beat.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

After England stopped trying to play the ball out of defence incredibly slowly, they were pretty good. Bellingham was fantastic.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Hopefully the French crush them.

ABE.

-13 ( +3 / -16 )

England are always the same - they look like world beaters against lesser teams, but they always seem to get found out when they come up against the better teams.

France will be the first big test - if they can beat them, then I'll be a little bit more confident, but I won't genuinely believe that football is coming home until we actually get our hands on the trophy!

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Weird that, isn’t it?

I’m a reasonable chess player and thrash the computer on easy level at chess but struggle at the higher levels.

I’ve never quite worked out why.

Anyone got any suggestions?

5 ( +8 / -3 )

England made the Senegal side look like a bunch of Amateurs. Just hope they don't rest on their Laurels and continue the struggle through to the Final.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

The English are really cocky, their media is biased, and their pundits and fans are awful. I hope they don’t win for the sake of football.

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

All media is biased. Check out the Japanese media on the national team. Cocky helps wins games.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

I’m from England but always thought of England as second tier in international football. Good, but historically not at the level of Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France or Spain.

It’s incredible how they live…what is it the trolls like to say…’rent-free’ in the heads of people.

Must be more significant than I thought.

They think more about England than many English.

As a grown-up, someone who knows a bit about football and loves the game, I tend to just enjoy the games.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

England was in the Euro finals 2021 against Italy and the game ended 1-1. Italy won on penalties 3-2. England did not lose a game until the final.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Well, not going out on penalties against the Germans this time!

4 ( +7 / -3 )

After England stopped trying to play the ball out of defence incredibly slowly, they were pretty good. Bellingham was fantastic.

Yes, it was all very static, then the first time they speed it up, its a ball into Foden, backheel flick to Kane doing his false 9 thing, ball down the line to Bellingham, and in on a plate for a great run by Henderson.

England were genuinely hopeless for about a year coming into this tournament, they barely scored and were relegated in that Nations League thing, but Southgate is again proving to be very capable big game manager. It sounds like he's off after this, so that leaves only three games max for him. This is easily the most likeable England team I've seen (Robson's 1990 team were jammy, and Euro 96 wasn't really covered in Japan), so I really hope they can go on and do it. The fact that the taking the knee upsets the gammons and twenty odd people who watch GB News makes the team even more likeable.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

England v France, a must see QF.

Both teams have entertained, produced the goods and excelled.

Only room for one for the SF.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The fact that the taking the knee upsets the gammons and twenty odd people who watch GB News makes the team even more likeable

Yep.

I did like the England ‘90 team - Gascoigne, Beardsley, Barnes and Waddle were great to watch. England with a defender of Des Walker’s quality would be great in this tournament.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The English are really cocky, their media is biased, and their pundits and fans are awful. I hope they don’t win for the sake of football.

Starting to have impure thoughts about England possible winning are we?

Don't worry, I'm sure someone will beat us and that it will somehow make your team of dreadful bogtrotters seem less abject in your infant eyes.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

3 Lions played smart football against the Lions of Teranga. Rival supporters singing and dancing in the stands will be remembered for their energetic performances.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Starting to have impure thoughts about England possible winning are we?

Exactly. But some of us are weighing up the pros and cons. If they win, we'll no longer hear about 1966 every second day on TV. But I guess we'll have to endure 2022 for another 50 years or so. :-)

There's still some way to go. England's attacking potential is really strong - too many good players up front some might say - who to choose. But still a few weaknesses at the back. In some ways, similar to France, which should make for a great game. Having said that, it'll probably turn out to be the most boring game of the tournament - both side being extra careful. Let's hope not.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The fact that the taking the knee upsets the gammons and twenty odd people who watch GB News makes the team even more likeable.

The England team taking the knee is the sight of 11 multimillionaires disappearing up their own backsides. What is the point of it? Why does the England team do it but not any other team? What does it actually achieve? Is it uniting all of the fans together in the face of racism? What is so racist about English football anyway? I've been to hundreds of games in England and never heard any kind of racist chanting or abuse. Players of ethnic minorities have enjoyed huge success at every level of the English game, including the England team that is almost half made up of ethnic minorities.

Taking the knee strikes me as something that comes from a bunch of middle-class Guardian readers, most of whom have never been to a football match, incorrectly assuming that working-class English football fans must be a bunch of racists and xenophobes because they voted for Brexit and need to be preached to in this way to teach them a lesson. In the last Euro final between England and Italy, out of 500 million Europeans, 50 million from England the other 450 million were supporting Italy - a team with precisely zero ethnic minority players on the pitch in that final, probably because Italy's football fans are the most racist in western Europe, where black players are regularly berated with monkey chants and the like. But everyone in Europe supported them because arrogant, Brexit-supporting England racist, apparently. You couldn't make it up.

I'll support England, and I hope we win the world cup, but if, as I expect, we don't, my disappointment will be tempered at least somewhat by the fact that the team that continues with this sanctimonious, preaching, anti-working-class, virtue-signalling nonsense that does absolutely nothing to combat racism, and likely actually makes the problem worse, didn't win it.

-14 ( +0 / -14 )

Pray tell, what does the untimely demise of an African-American career criminal have to do with English football. Was George Floyd secretly an Aston Villa supporter?

Your language tells us pretty much why they need to take the knee. And the fact that you chose to focus on it is also telling.

Football has been riven by racism not just in the crowds but also on the pitch. Black players were often greeted with monkey chants or had bananas thrown at them. Racial minorities didn't attend matches due to the abuse they received.

If you're not British and didn't know, now you do. If you are British and are still asking this question, then it's clear why they had to take the knee.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Have you actually been to a game in England? There hasn't been any of that for decades now. Almost every team has a number of black players, and they are very often among the fan's favourites. As I said in my comment above (which will probably get deleted soon), I've personally been to loads of games in one of the least ethnically diverse and most working-class cities in England and never heard any of it and if it did occur, rest assured the clubs would deal with it in the most severe manner possible including lifetime bans and prosecution where possible.

Of course, any racism is too much, and I'd support effective measures against it (taking the knee is not effective IMO, and if anything has made things worse because there is too much politics wrapped around that gesture), but to say that the English game is riddled with racism and that players are on the end of monkey chants and banana-throwing is just flat-out wrong.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

The Premier League and European clubs and national sides have done much to deal with racism but it hasn’t been completely eradicated. Last year’s Euro Finals saw it raise its ugly head when black English players missed their penalty shootout shots. Like Markus Rashford.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

France have a formidable squad.

I would not bet against them

Having said that, well wags aside, if England can rise above and produce value in results of France team estimate of their ego in individual parts, well who knows?

Last year’s Euro Finals saw it raise its ugly head when black English players missed their penalty shootout shots. Like Markus Rashford.

and why did that happen I wonder? Loads of black players missed penalties previously and didn’t get any abuse, but at that tournament where the England players insisted on this taking the knee gesture throughout, with all the politics wrapped up in it, which had half the fans booing because they don’t feel affinity with that particular political brand, all of a sudden, it culminates in these black players receiving abuse on Twitter (most of it came from outside of England BTW). I guess we can’t say for certain but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the taking the knee stuff was a contributing factor. It’s divisive and achieves nothing, and imo is counterproductive to what they are trying to accomplish.

France vs England could be a cracker.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

France will win

11 people were arrested for racism at the Euro Finals.

The UK Football Policing Unit received 600 reports of racist comments sent to England's black players after the defeat and judged 207 to be criminal.

Of these, 123 were posted by people overseas, while 34 came from the UK.

A wave of racist social media abuse was aimed at Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka after they missed penalties in the shoot-out at the Euro 2020 final last month.

Scott McCluskey, 43, was given a 14-week suspended sentence and must wear an electronic tag for 40 weeks.

A stupid move. Taking the knee is a gesture that comes directly from US sports and is affiliated most strongly with the BLM movement and, so-called woke politics in general. White working class English are generally antipathetic toward woke or progressive politics - they are more socially conservative and look at things through a pragmatic rather than the ideological lens that progressives like to see everything through. It annoys them that progressives want to speak out for every single minority cause, whether it be gay rights, trans rights, immigrant rights, assylum seekers etc. yet when it comes to working class people who don't fall into any of those categories, and who are just as much disenfranchised as any of those minorities, they turn their noses up at them. In the UK, the progressives have now completely taken over the traditional working class political party, the Labour party, despite the fact that there was already a political party there that represented the progressive cause in the Liberal Democrats. Globalization, free movement of labor has effectively sold off working class English people's livelihoods to the lowest bidders, mass immigration has changed their neighborhoods beyond recognition with spiraling crime, house prices, rents and investment in public services that has nowhere near matched the massive increases in population that we've seen. And then, the one outlet for English working class - their very own game, football, somewhere where they can get away from all of lifes strife, have a few beers, sing a few lairy songs to the opposition and suddenly they are confronted with this highly political gesture that is strongly affiliated with the very political movement that they can't stand. And people wonder why they boo it? People wonder why there's a reaction to it - a reaction in the complete opposite direction of the one that its proponents want to take - it is precisely what we saw in the Euro finals.

You want to take a stand against racism? Sure, that's great. But taking the knee is completely the wrong way to go about it.

Nihon Tora, your immature and ill-informed posts could be torn apart at length but let me put you right with one important fact. It was the working classes who fought Mosley's facist and racist black shirts off the streets in the 30s. And when exactly does an anti-racism message target the working classes?

Taking the knee strikes me as something that comes from a bunch of middle-class Guardian readers, most of whom have never been to a football match

If you have ever been to a game of football in the premier league (I doubt that very much) in the past 20 years you would have noticed that it is very middle class.

If the manager Southgate and his players want to continue taking a knee then what are you going to do to stop them? Apart from spouting all that Football Lads Alliance nonsense above?

What exactly is your hangup with one of the most racially-inclusive teams in the world cup sending an anti-racism message? Is that your problem? Do you have an issue with anti-racism?

sold off working class English people's livelihoods to the lowest bidders, mass immigration has changed their neighborhoods beyond recognition with spiraling crime

Oh right, that answers that one then.

At Arsenal we kicked the national front off the streets around Highbury when they tried to recruit way back in the 60s and 70s.

If you have ever been to a game of football in the premier league (I doubt that very much) in the past 20 years you would have noticed that it is very middle class.

Actually, I have, but as I mentioned, it is a working class place and there are practically zero middle-class fans at the club I support. Arsenal - sure - probably because most working class people have been priced out.

So what's your recommendation?

I don't know - pretty much anything else that doesn't have a whole load of other political baggage wrapped around it like the taking the knee gesture does.

And sorry, but not supporting mass, uncontrolled immigration is not "racist" as your post suggests. Quite a lot of people in the UK want more control - it was one of the main driving forces for Brexit, which the majority of people in the UK voted for - to suggest that they are all racists is clearly nonsense. The UK is one of the least racist nations on the planet.

Almost half of football fans in England support the England team taking the knee at Euro 2020

What about the other half? From your own link - 30% of supporters support those booing taking the knee. Sounds pretty divisive to me.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I kind of wanted to disagree with @ Nihon Tora and agree with @Tiger.

But I have to say that the taking the knee thing hasn't meant anything much outside of the team for a while now. It's a noble gesture, but I think it's going the way of the ice bucket challenge. It's not doing much, doesn't mean much to most people.

And I agree that having a stance on reducing immigration does not equal racism. No society can withstand a sustained high level of immigration without there being social friction.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

It has been many many decades since football was the sole sport of the working class with a cuppa and pie at half pie. Most clubs now charge £5 plus for a pie. The tickets are way too expensive especially when you price away game travel.

You want to take a stand against racism? Sure, that's great. But taking the knee is completely the wrong way to go about it.

So what do you do to take a stand against racism? Or do you only exclusively tell people who are taking a stand against racism that they're doing it wrong?

Fact check yourself son:

After the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014, The ALS Association’s Board of Trustees determined that the best use of these proceeds was to immediately put them to work by increasing funding in our core mission areas. As a result, we doubled our operating budget, with most of the increase allocated to research and care service initiatives.

The Ice Bucket Challenge helped us expand our scope

Since the Ice Bucket Challenge, the national office of the Association has spent more than $131 million toward our mission (research, care services, and advocacy). The Association has almost tripled research spending and directed over $89 million toward research. (The Association has an additional $16.6 million in future research commitments.) Our support of treatment centers and other care initiatives has increased more than 600% on an annual basis when compared to spending levels prior to the Ice Bucket Challenge, helping make high quality ALS care more accessible to everyone.

Will do Dad! I don't doubt that it was effective, I even soaked myself for the cause. Everyone was doing it and chucking in money. But it soon lost its impact, and I think taking the knee has too.
