They were never going to get 1.2 million.

They were never going to hold it in the summer.]They were never going to serve alcohol.

They knew this from day one.

They lied. They paid.

Still better than Tokyo Olympics that only get less than 250 thousands foreign visitors that already included people who arrived not for Olympics.

they probably failed to realize that the world's going to recession and a lot of people are cutting back on a lot of things, including attending sporting events. Especially at a time like this where livestreaming is common.

originally forecast led to an unexpected glut of accommodation but has also averted major over-crowding or traffic headaches in Qatar, the smallest country by both population and area to host the World Cup.

Said it all in that article you had on here a week or 2 ago. Prices for accommodation were through the roof so people were staying in UAE and Bahrain to save money then flying in on game day.

Lots reporting was done by German and French news outlets in Europe about Qatar and it's use of migrant workers to build the stadium and how 6500 workers died building it in terrible conditions, this I think had a major impact.

Personally, I reckon pretty much everyone who actually wanted to go will have gone there.

That is, there is very little pent-up demand of people who actually were prepared to go with their own money but didn't for reasons A, B, or C. There would also be no tickets for such people even if they had managed to get there.

What this means is that the 1.2 million projection is a joke. There is a high tendency for other events, not just the Olympics, to use the same logic. "We are going to host the event because one million people will come and spend YYYY millions". This is usually lies.

The 2026 World Cup to be held mainly in the US will exceed attendance expectations.

Some MLS teams already have a higher attendance at their games as compared with other US-owned teams in the Premier League.

The article is not about the MLS or the Premier League which you are so envious of. With the US being a bigger country and population you would expect more fans to attend.

But sadly, the MLS is trying to play catchup. Even the largest club, Atlanta United FC averaged 47,116 this season.

Most of the fans at MLS games are less than 25,000. Less than the Champions League in England.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Soccer_attendance

The quality of the MLS isn't on par with the Premier League, the greatest in the world.

The Netherlands with a tiny population of 18 million crushed the USA, with a population of 330 million, 3-1.

Some of the International sponsors like Budweiser are suing FIFA for a refund.

They had 20% empty seats for a game with Qatar playing. This increased to 40% after half time.

How on earth did they award the World cup to a country that had NEVER EVER Qualified for the cup even if they get to qualify in the easiest qualification group, Asia. Sorry, second easiest, 4 from North America...LOL

Right, I get it..... They bribed everyone involved.

It’s a terribly queer affair driven by money not what’s best for the game.

..... @painkiller. The difference that they fill their smaller stadiums in many cases. Your research and knowledge of Football and especially the Premier League (other than your ownership obsession) is close to minimal. As is mine about NHL - for example.

.. And the Netherlands didn't just crush the USA, they embarrassed the USA. Was like watching a Premier League side play a Sunday League side.

You agree with my research results that MLS teams get more spectators than several Premier League teams (or else you would have presented contrasting evidence) but them say my knowledge is close to minimal? Intriguing.

US played Netherlands? Forgot about that already. The US-England game was the most watched one, and seeing the US control England's team was such a boost for US soccer. And for England---geez, they invented the sport--to get manhandled by the Americans was just incredibly pleasing.

Your knowledge is close to minimal. How on earth are AFC Bournemouth supposed to have a higher attendance then say LA Galaxy , when their capacity is 11,379 vs 27,000? Your ‘research’ is just skewed towards your warped thinking..

Average attendance Premier League last season 39989.

Average attendance MLS last season last season 21033.

You understand we promotion/relegation too?

Yes, 15.4 million people watched the England/USA game. Shows what a spectacle it must be to play the Three Lions. Shame it was a dull performance by both teams that nobody will remember, unlike the Football last night.

Want to learn about upsets, then look no further than Brazil last night. A group 0-0 game will not be remembered by anybody, other than you @painkiller.

The only time this game will ever get mentioned again is if we face you in another World Cup.

Your Women's team drew another 10 million, thats far more impressive, back in 2015.

I understand you are just trying to be provocative, and for some reason dislike the English, but give it up mate. No need for it.

The USWNT is taking the lead in the US.

The TV figures for MLS are very low or nonexistent. NBA bought TV rights for the Premier League. Estimated to be worth around $1.466 billion.

Back on topic please.

The report registered 1.33 million match ticketholders and 3.09 million tickets sold across the eight stadiums in Qatar for the tournament that ends on Dec. 18.

Not a good showing. And Qatar unlikely has a need for their new stadiums.

The US will far surpass this amount, and will be the most successful World Cup for number of spectators, as many MSL teams already draw far larger crowds than seen in the smaller Premier League for example.
