No, I think political correctness will be the death of political correctness.

Many have already had enough and no longer care or even quite enjoy it if the PC crowd are "offended".

Shouldn't the question be, 'do we think political correctness has been the death of comedy?'

7 ( +10 / -3 )

No. Nobody cares what the wokes think.

Comedy will go underground for a bit until the fad for puritanism passes.

Get the boxed sets of 'Carry On' movies, Mel Brooks, Monty Python and enjoy yourself.

If it persists then yes

That’s not the point. It already often is and more over also will be the economical and career ‘death’ for many of the affected comedians who not abide.

Nah. Political correctness is now the subject of the comedy.

Without a doubt, Yes!

political correctness?

its/you know what I mean/....euphenism?

It already has killed it. Hopefully its starting to go into reverse. What is the last time anybody can honestly say they saw something genuinely funny on Network TV? Think you have to go back to the late noughties.

That "woke" word keeps cropping up. I'm wondering how woke the guy in the clip below is considered. He is attacking racism after all. (Warning - strong language)

Hell, we can’t even say anything humorous here.

War quips are defiantly off the agenda

On a conference call, discussing the fallout of economic and fiscal sanctions, quipped at least we are not sell arms.

Then recanted my favorite war joke.

How many guns do you need for a firefight?

Two. One for us to shoot and one for the United States to sell to the enemy so he can shoot back at us.

Silence, you could just hear the tumbleweed in the background.

HR went into overdrive.

Of course, it is.

PC killed comedy years ago.

George Carlin had an act about such, didn't he?

Live stand-up comics still bend the bar and are enjoying some real popularity.

Jim Jeffries is wooing them in all corners.

I think the current crop of stand-up comedians are nothing special. It's certainly not a golden age. Yet in the UK, they are playing stadium gigs.

So political correctness is clearly not killing comedy. If anything, we have a mediocre generation of standups compared to Carlin, Pryor, Murphy, Derek and Clive, Python, NTNON, .... selling out massive venues and selling DVD box sets and getting millions of views on Youtube. Lenny Bruce never did that.

fwiw, I think there's plenty of good comedy out there, but standup, the genre most likely to be killed by "political correctness", is actually super trendy and plenty of them are coining it in despite not being all that good.

No, comedy is the death of political correctness.

No. The more radical some PC gets, the more backlash against it (not a sliding back, but a refusal to take up the cry). People have been suggesting "history" ("his story") be changed for ages, it hasn't. People have said Valentine's Day should be called other names, it's not. I rarely hear "African American" as much as I hear "black" these days (I mean, what if the person being referred to is black and from Europe? Isn't assuming they are from the Americas equally just that -- an assumption and stereotype?) same as "white" people are simply "whites", etc. The reasonable stuff, though, like not doing blackface sketches or bashing LGBT for laughs, is holding up, and rightly so.

On the contrary, political incorrectness will be the death of comedy -- just look at all the comedians who have seen their careers go down the toilet as a result... and rightly so. If the right wings of the world get their way, too, and cancel all culture they deem not their own in trumped-up culture wars, THAT will more likely be the death of comedy.
