have your say

Netflix has a policy of bypassing cinemas to show some films direct to television, which is causing disputes with cinema chains in some countries. What's your stance on the issue?

That I'd never pay 1800 yen for a film that I could see for far cheaper or free online? Duh.

Times change. New business models are a constant thing. Old business models sometimes become irrelevant. So, what's the big deal? The writers, producers, directors and actors, all all the support people still get paid to do what they do best, and that's to create entertainment and get it out to the masses in the most efficient manner possible. Like @jcapan, I no longer have any desire to pay through the nose to sit in a theatre to watch the latest release. More often than not, I can wait a month or two and get a DVD from my library. For free. Not rocket science.

If you preach for Free market, then make no exceptions

I plan to go and see Logan at night this week - just 1,200 yen late night show, because it is an event, something to go out to do. And I'll remember it. But so many mornings I can't recall what movie or TV series I saw the night before, even when alcohol is not the problem. I think the Netflix model fits the latter. But the hyper-expensive movie ticket model here and elsewhere.

Don't like DVDs and actually see most new movies on long haul flights.

If movies are big in scale and budget, does that financial model fit Netflix and their ilk? Certainly smaller scale ones are would. So, to an extent it depends. My reservation about Netflix is simply that online technology will change as will costs and I do not want to be drawn into getting to grips with a new thing every couple of years.

However, as in Cannes recently, Netflix were out of line given what the Cannes festival is (it is actually French, rather than international) and what it stands for . However, Netflix etc. are not going away and festivals like Cannes and also big and small movie theatres and complexes will have to get used to it or fade away like so many have done since the age of the Beta vs. VHS conflict (remember it?).

What is the big deal? Films have done straight to DVD is the past so why not?
