U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to make a state visit to Japan May 25-28. What do the Japanese people whom you know generally think of him?

Other than poodle-Vichy Abe and co. I have never met a Japanese person who has a favorable thing to say about him.

One word - "Idiot"...

They think that he is an idiot. And some feel embarrassed by Abe's behavior toward him.

Says someone who ran out to see the new Avengers movie.

Unfortunately most of the Japanese people I know only watch NHK/MSM which always paints Trump as evil, so they have a bad impression of him. I ask them when the last time a North Korean missile flew over Japan and they can't remember because it's been almost a year and a half. Last one was when Trump had started calling Kim "Little Rocket Man" to let him know it's not business as usual.

Most of the Japanese people I know see him as more clownish than evil. His antics at rallies and stupidity on Twitter need no spin from the media.

You're behind the curve, they're "in love" now...

I'll repeat my earlier comment - they think he's an idiot...

Fool, idiot, moron, clown.

That seems to be the consensus in my experience. I haven’t come across any Japanese who see him as a criminal. I have met some who notice that Republican presidents seem to be less intelligent than democratic ones.

In his favour, I have met some Japanese who find him entertaining.

Which has nothing to do with what people around me say, does it ?

I have yet to meet a single Japanese person who speaks of Trump with anything close to respect. In general, he is regarded as a clown, a crook, an idiot and a fat old bald man with a profoundly ridiculous haircut.

I have. They don't have much respect for their prime minister and government.

The most "unjapanese" of all presidents.

Something wrong with that? MAGA, baby!

It shouldn't be a surprise that Japanese don't think much of him - by putting America first, Trump often makes it worse for other countries' people

Logically speaking, why would people from other countries like someone who makes it worse for them?

So why expect those people to like him

(Think about it: if you yourself are only looking out for #1, why would you expect other people to like you?)

I am expecting near mortality inducing levels of embarrassment. Japanese may only look for that in Abe Shinzo, who comes off pretty well in comparison.

@Patricia Yarrow You are going to be surprised.

I have.

I honestly haven’t. As I posted, I’ve met some who find him comical, but not in a George Carlin way.

What do the Japanese people who like him say in his favour?

Most of people I personally know like him, but think he’s a bit pushy and I tell them, that’s what makes him great, other than that, a lot of them don’t care either way as long as he can maintain a good relationship between the two countries.

Did you meet these people before or after you labeled him the leader of a lunatic fringe?

Before and after I wised up.
