What do you think is the best way for the central government in Japan to strike a balance between controlling the spread of the coronavirus and supporting the economy?

quite a complex question to answer for the common man, don't you think? In my humble opinion, the government should increase financial support to industries that are heavily-hit by the pandemic like the tourism and entertainment sector. I don't know how the government operates in Japan, but it can probably divert funds from its other budgets. As for controlling the spread, take stronger measures against it. If there's a potential local outbreak, enforce the according measures with the intent to contain the virus and economic concerns second.

What other countries have done outside of the US and Japan but in the other advanced nations of the world. As stringent as allowed by law lockdown measures enacted for a definite period of time as determined by the scientific experts in the field.
Combined with the the financial wherewithal to individuals and families to weather the period of economic hardship.
Not corporate welfare disguised as pandemic relief like GoTo.

A proper circuit breaker lockdown, for two weeks.
Enforce mask wearing and social distancing, everywhere. Fines and closures for businesses and individuals who break the rules.
Mass testing, and a tracing system to warn those who have been in contact with Covid can isolate and get tested. Testing should be FREE.

And there is the problem. You have to temporarily leave that balance into the direction not even tried up to now. The balanced version and also the ignorance option a la Trump both showed no success, did they or will they? Of course, not.

You do realize that there are literally 1,000's of small businesses (restaurants, yakitori shops, small ryokan, etc.) who are being helped to surive with this program right? Some are registered as Corporations and some are not.

Keep the Suga (ahem Abe) central government out of it. Let local health authorities and elected leaders deal with it.

excellent ideas. I would also add more incentives by the gov to encourage businesses to let their employees work from home. More online lessons for students- particularly those old enough to be left at home such as JHS and HS students. shortened school hours for elementary and kindergarten. These would be good ideas even without the virus- but they are absolutely essential now.

It may be too much to ask of Japan but look and learn from other countries which have done well. It amazes me that Japan has not had a lockdown. Just urging people to do something won't help. Instead, you're getting wave after wave.

There is no balance between them. It is one or the other, as Australia has proven. Australia sacrificed its economy costing the country billions of dollars with tens of thousands becoming unemployed. However, after six months of strict lockdowns and border closures they have beaten the virus and are now starting an economic recovery creating tens of thousands of new jobs and promoting ‘safe’ domestic travel.

How many billions and how many unemployed?
