To a large segment of Americans, especialy in the inner cities, they are nothing new. Been doing fist bumps and forearm bumps since I was a teenager back in the disco era.
We can't all carry hand sanitizer in our pockets, but I'd suggest to politicians everywhere that they do precisely that. It evaporates quickly, can be used before and after the handshake, and makes for great photo-ops. Not to mention a mighty fine teaching tool!
As someone with callused and sweaty hands, I always tend to go for the fist bump even in formal settings, it helps break the ice a bit faster as it is less intimidating. I agree with Reckless, a bow seems a better alternative to greet someone in this time. One thing I haven't seen yet in public are people giving each other those "foot bumps", that honestly looks weird. I do miss a good hug from a friend though.

What, the entire situation isn't enough of a circus already?

Silly but makes people feel virtuous. Anyway here it is hardly an issue as bowing etc is the norm.

How about just not touching everyone you meet?
Luddite
They look ridiculous. Best just to nod and say hello.

How about toe bumps? Or maybe a hip check?

To paraphrase Marilyn Monroe, "is that a bottle of sanitizer in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

Ask your virologist, what ‘enormous’ difference that would make. Or better a trusted psychiatrist... lol
