What do you think of the nicknames that some sports teams use? For example, in the U.S., the NFL's Washington Redskins and other teams are under pressure to change their monikers because they are seen as being disrespectful to Native Americans.

The need for political correctness and sensitivity for everything is just overbearing sometimes. Not saying that such a thing is bad but if you're aware enough, you can probably find a lot of things that are offensive in everyday things that have peacefully existed for years before this mentality emerged. This is no different than that earlier topic where public pressure is mounting for the removal of some monuments because they remind people of historical animosities done by those from the before times.

Agree with Toshihiro. Too much political correctness may be detrimental in the long run.

I don't see why they can't just call the teams something catchy, like Washington Whiteboys, Atlanta Invaders, or Cleveland Colonisers.

The Fighting Whites (alternatively identified as Fightin' Whites, Fighting Whities, or Fightin' Whities) were an intramural basketball team formed at the University of Northern Colorado in 2002 and named in response to the Native American mascot controversy.

The place where many defenders of outdated idea run to: "Political correctness." You are both confusing political correctness with plain old correctness. What the Washington football club and others did was never ever correct.
Aly Rustom
really what about the fighting whites?

what about the team from Ghana called All Blacks?

All blacks, All Reds. Those do not specifically signify a skin color. Big difference from All Blackskins, and Redskins. The name implicitly refers to a skin color and is deemed offensive by a good portion of the population. It has nothing to do with being PC.

Invariably, those that complain about "political correctness", are doing so from a position of privilege.
Aly Rustom
So what? Skin color is not the only way to offend someone.
lots of names are deemed offensive by lots of people. I can give you a list of offensive team names if you like.
Aly Rustom
All blacks, All Reds. Those do not specifically signify a skin color.
BS. Of course they do

I'm of Middle Eastern descent. My name is Aly. When I went to the US for college I was called a Sand N-word, rag head and camel jockey. And THAT was in the good old days before 9/11. Please refrain from making blanket statements about people you don't know anything about.

Post of the day. Great stuff.
Mocheake
No they do not.
First: New Zealand's national rugby team: Billy Wallace, one of the 1905/6 stars, speaking at the team’s 50th Jubilee in 1955, gave his version of how the name originated:
‘Now I’m just going to mention how we got the name of ‘All Blacks’. These coves don’t know, I was on the Committee and I know all about it. We played Hartlepool and we beat them 63-0, and the ‘Daily Mail’, an English paper, wrote up ‘New Zealand team all backs’ you see. So we were, all our forwards could pass as good as any back, and it was headed up ‘New Zealand All Backs’. And the next match we went on, I think it was Somerset. This ‘All Black’ was a printer’s error and we went on to Somerset and all around the town it said ‘Come and see the All Blacks play’, the printer had made a mistake and instead of ‘All Back’ he had got the l in somehow and made it ‘All Black’, and that’s how the name ………….of ‘All Blacks’ originated and it’s stuck ever since.
Next: the Cincinnati baseball club, whose nickname offends no one -
The Cincinnati Red Stockings, so named because they wore red socks, were baseball's first openly all-professional team. In 1882, Cincinnati's entry in the newly formed American Association took the same name and retained it after moving to the National League in 1890.
Those names have NOTHING to do with SKIN color. No BS!

People who think political correctness has gone too far seem to be unaware of how many racial slurs are no longer heard in society on many levels. Besides the N-word, there’s the K-word, S-word, W-word, and things like pineapple h* and s-eyed. Even the J-word is not heard anymore. Unless, of course the ‘political correctness gone too far’ crowd uses these words in their everyday life, which they might.
Since Ally heard them, perhaps the PC too far as*wipes do use those words. To be hurtful, of course.
Just as ‘redskin’ was used in a not-flattering way. Ever watch Peter Pan? “What makes a redskin red?” To people who are sympathetic to others, it’s cringeworthy.

lol... my post was not aimed at anyone specific. You sharing that opinion does not detract from the overall truth of it. Like there are going to be some people of African descent vote for Trump in the next election: it's going to happen. Doesn't mean Trump's not a racist, or that said voter's doing the right thing.
You appear more than capable of making your own incorrect statements too. ;)
Aly Rustom
But Guess what- the fighting whites do. So are you going to be equally as indignant about that name?
What? That political correctness is going too far?? I supported the taking down of the statues of slave traders because that WAS wrong, but what you and Mocheake are complaining about is just plain silly.
Aly Rustom
The other thing you have failed to address Mocheake is the fact that the issue isn't about color of skin as there are MANY ways to offend people without mentioning the color of their skin, which is somethign jumper also doesn't seem to get.

How about we just change all the names on the above sheet and just be done with it. Hell, lets just give them all plant and flower names. That way, NO ONE will be offended
noriahojanen
Seems that people got "infected" with political correctness virus... I hope they will soon recover and regain reason.
Cincinnati "Reds" was once renamed during the 1950s and under McCarthyism. The Club regained the original name later. I guess this is how will happen to the current name-fare.

STill don't get it- IF that is disrespectful then there are other names that are also disrespectful that you should be on about. Not only this one.

I don't know if it's true, but I heard that most native Americans don't mind the name Redskins.
kyushubill
OK, rename the Washington Redskins the Washington Deep State Critters, Kansas City Chiefs the KC Tollway Bandits, Dallas Cowboys the Dallas Kennedy Asassins, Cleveland Indians the Cleveland Lake Erie Polluters, Atlanta Braves the Atlanta Toothless Rednecks, the Chicago Blackhawks the Chicago Gangstas, and the Golden State Warriors the Golden State Tax Collectors.

HAHAHAHAHA!! brilliant!
