have your say

What is your view on people or groups who use social media to air extremist views, hate speech, incite violence or libel others? Where should the line be drawn, if at all, with regards to freedom of speech?

If it is criminal to say it in person, it should be criminal to write it online. This is not an issue of freedom of speech, which has generally established boundaries. "Fire!" in a movie theater etc. etc.

The one metaphor I like about social media is that is connects all the unhinged people who would otherwise be sitting on their own at the end of the bar being humoured or ignored for their OTT opinions. Linking up online gives them strength in numbers. It is also easy for eager or zealous people to create something online that is much bigger than real life. Even in commerce, many tiny and disorganized companies lurk behind beautiful websites. What this means that tiny organizations, anti-vax or whatever, can easily end up getting vastly disproportionate attention.

I think Facebook for example should more actively restrict abusive posters. I now have basically limited my friends to my family and close friends of under 40 persons but I still get posts of hate about Muslims, Clinton, etc. I really just want a platform to share photos with my family.

If they incite violence, then of course they should be stopped. That's not freedom of speech, to say somebody should be raped or killed because they say something you don't like. Women are threatened with physical violence a lot on social media, and this is all too often downplayed or ignored by the admin.

I'm concerned about who determines what is and isn't hate speech. Often, legitimate criticism or discussion of certain groups or countries (without inciting violence) is unjustly labelled as hate speech and shut down.

Just give up using all social network sites which I did 10 years ago. They sap your lives.

Never forget that it's us in the west who hold the extremist views. We're completely out of step with the rest of the world on most controversial social issue, from homosexuality to abortion to refugees. In the context of a global user base, the social media platforms are the ones promoting an extremist fringe view in their ToS.

It’s a good point. The very idea of criticizing and ridiculing some ideas or institutions is regarded as unacceptable in many parts of the world.

My view is to block or delete them. I got work and real life to deal with. If you have enough free time to air your hate on social media, time to get a second job.
