have your say

Although Japan's Road Transportation Act basically bans taxis from declining rides to passengers, many taxi companies want drivers to be allowed to refuse passengers who are not wearing masks amid the coronavirus pandemic. What's your stance on this?

Weren't taxi drivers among Japan's first victims and (unwitting) spreaders?

Other businesses and airlines have this prerogative. Why not hapless taxi drivers?

I think that compulsory mask use for ride is justified for now. I even hear that a special ordinance has already been implemented in Tokyo or else which allows taxi drivers to refuse defiant passengers. Taxi drivers better have a free mask ready for a unmasked passenger.

Taxi drivers should certainly refuse passengers not wearing masks.

Taxi drivers MUST refuse passengers not wearing masks, also for the safety of the next passengers.

Taxi drivers should be able to refuse customers who pose a health risk to them. Wear a mask, or risk being refused taxi service

Taxi drivers better have a free mask ready for a unmasked passenger.

As a reward?

If a measure is objectively proved to be helpful in decreasing the spreading of a dangerous infection it is valid to make it a requirement. Of course a mechanism also have to be put in place for those people that have valid medical reasons to not wear one (maybe arranging the trip with the taxi company in advance).

Taxis should reserve the right to refuse, or in the very least, have a mask ready for customers for customers for an additional fee.

I think they should refuse no maskers, and drunks.

The drivers should just keep driving, and not stop to pick up people not wearing masks.

Who wants to ride in a taxi where the previous occupant has no mask

Yes of course the taxi driver should have the right to refuse a passenger, the more so where that passenger is a potential hazard to their health an livelihood. Not to mention a hazard to subsequent passengers.

The problem is the taxis who are waiting in a queue at train stations, hotels, malls, etc.

Weeeeeell.... let's not be extreme. Refusing to pick up drunks would cut the number of riders by half, at least.

As my grandma taught me

Never upset the person cooking your food or driving your ride.

Just wear the danged thing if the driver asks.

Taxi driver dilemma:

Pick up the drunk salaryman with no mask on, or the gaijin with the mask?
