have your say

Do you think film awards like the Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys and so on will eventually go "gender neutral" and replace Best Actor and Best Actress awards, for example, with Best Lead and Best Supporting Lead, or something like that?

I don't really care about the Oscars or the lovies who gush when they step up to receive their little trophies from other lovies. Who cares if they get their knickers in a twist about being labelled an actress or actor...

What next, there are no losers, everyone is a winner, and they all get a sweetie and a book token.

Sounds as if people are bored and looking for something else to change.

Viewership down 64% this year. Hollywoodites, like NFL and NBA players and owners and other elites, who somehow think people want to hear their out-of-touch political opinions, are fading into oblivion.

It's refreshing to see so many people so passionate about the arts, mind.

Only the other day, several of them were complaining about Hollywood being stuck in the past.

Glad to see the usual suspects now embrace a future that promises equality and merit.

I'm beginning to get fed up with this PC crap. It's so boring. I cannot see how distinguishing actors from actresses, waiters from waitresses inconveniences or offends anybody.

Except of course those who are constantly searching for ways to be offended.

Hopefully the whole thing is going to lose its appeal and become irrelevant soon, like its happening with Miss Universe, maybe then a system for true recognition of talent may appear.

Who cares...lol In most cases you’d better watch the movies that are unknown and uncelebrated.

*Ricky Gervais worded it best Jul ‘20; “*Social media amplifies everything. If you’re mildly left wing on Twitter, you’re suddenly Trotsky. If you’re mildly conservative, you’re Hitler, and, if you’re ‘centrist and you look at both arguments’, you’re a coward and both sides hate you.”

Ricky Gervais is an idiot when it comes to politics.

Maybe, but there is some truth in his quote about social media.

My mum likes films. She uses it. She’s an old lady and not up with PC culture. Maybe I should shout at her over the phone.

What is PC culture? I don't think you should shout at your mother for not knowing about personal computers, whether over the phone or otherwise.

Just do away with the whole thing altogether.

We need to send a new Voyerger Space craft to update the gold disc telling them about the human race should anyone ever come across it.

Some truth in that. I think it’s often the case that if you don’t agree on all ideas prescribed, you get thrown into the other category. I see myself as on the left on most issues but I have failed the purity test on all. Into the angry, white, middle-aged, conservative, transphobic, misogynistic bin you go.

I don't really care either way, but dividing acting ability by gender is arbitrary to begin with. It's not like your gender gives you any competitive

True, but I don’t think movie awards are given based solely or even mostly on ability. If you remove the male/female categories, the giving of awards will be an even more difficult calculation with the extra factor of gender thrown in with race, nationality, language, subject matter etc.

The male and female categories offer some simplification.

I'd bet a dollar to a donut that not a single one of the whiners in this thread actually watches the Golden Globes.

And if you do, as someone who watches the Golden Globes, it's would be hard to take what you say with any credibility.

Just give everyone a “Participation Certificate” and let’s be done with it all.

Gervais is best as a writer, and is great at puncturing precious egos. Not always spot on as a social commentator but always worth a watch, though.

Agreed @Jimizo, ‘I don’t regard myself as confused ; )”

Just an observation from a white, left-of-center, middle-aged man. I don’t regard myself as confused ;)

Of course not. And of course language and meaning of, differs from person to person & demographic to demographic. It doesn't really bother me; the story or what terms people use, in this case. That's down to them.

It's when some of the usual suspects claim that reporting on such items is somehow being shoved down their throats, that is one of the more amusing aspects of the reactions.

Probably, with the globalist corporate media shoving down people’s throats every other day, like this story.

Bloody US English predictive text!

Centre.

Keep the neoliberal rage going.

No rage.

I’m just pointing out that there are women who use this word. You do not come across them but I do. Maybe we move in different circles. Just sharing my experience.

The people who use the the word ‘actress’ are not all conservative men upset about the changing world. I use that word and I’m not a conservative nor a neoliberal.

Just an observation from a white, left-of-center, middle-aged man. I don’t regard myself as confused ;)

I’ve heard women use the word ‘actress’. My wife uses it. She’s not a ‘broflake’.

My mum likes films. She uses it. She’s an old lady and not up with PC culture.

Lol.

I'm not talking about people's parents, am I?

Maybe I should shout at her over the phone.

Not very nice of you but sure, whatever.

Keep the neoliberal rage going.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Don't see what's silly about it.

Aren't conservative types always telling us that jobs/awards should be on merit, regardless of race/gender?

With gender neutral - it will surely be down to merit, rather than dividing everyone into genders like the past?

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Apart from broflakes online, I've not heard people use the word "actress" for ages.

Actor these days refers to male and female. Pretty sure it includes trans as well. Don't see the big deal, really. Apart from broflakes online, I've not heard people use the word "actress" for ages.

If they do, I'd watch them less than I do now. Which is already at zero.
