I doubt much will change besides some joint statements on future economic ties or whatever and maybe that's for the best considering Russia's belligerence. However I honestly do hope more can come from the visit and that a roadmap for the islands can be decided while also getting started with Japanese investment in the Russian East and energy deals
I'll give this the benefit of the doubt. Russia needs investments of Japanese industries in the far east of Russia. Russia would benefit and - probably - the Japanese companies as well. The territorial issue is a different story. I don't expect any progress there.

For Putin yes. For Japan a big fat NO!

It's all been decided beforehand. Putin's visit is rather like changing the guard at Buckingham Palace - pure ceremony.

Lots of traffic jams and silly news stories.

I agree with Aly Rustom above. Any gains that are to be made between the two countries will most likely be in Russia's favor.

There will be some breakthrough in the upcoming negotiations. Otherwise, what's the point in wasting precious time?

Putin is pretty good at this. Japan not so much. But hey: Putin lives in a swamp.
