have your say

Do you think that social networking will ever develop rules and etiquette ("netiquette") that most people will respect?

People will bound to respect and things are doing so, facebook had already stirred many incidents imposing their policy and recently they are making restrictions encouraging to make friends who are personally known, maximum requrests, and the most sensitive thing is album privacy of which most people are not well aware of.

Forgot to add.

Most of the good friends, etc got tired of boards, etc and we now talk via IRC, voice-chat, Video-chat mostly. Still on the net just not via the public forum, boards, etc means.

Might be wishful thinking but still happy with many people online that been running boards for the last 30yrs, etc met many good and solid friends worldwide over the decades.

Most of them are long-timers to the net and follow the netiquette rules, might be a dying breed though as most were online before the W W W .

If I mistook your post, my apologies. Text communication at times don't confer posters feelings and/or intent. Humble bow.

Zenny,

But in all seriousness I categorize your post under "wishful thinking" ;)

People who were brought up to show good manners will show good manners when they are on the Internet; people who were not brought up to show good manners will be the opposite. Good manners should never be out of place in any form of communication.

There are always consequences, don't matter if you talk online or face to face.

Problem is that most people think they can talk online any old way as they will never face the music(so to speak). So they can talk any old crap, lies, etc.

I have been online for over 30yrs now and met many people online and in real life too, interesting to see how some online and real-life persona change at times.

And today the whole world is interconnected so you never know who you will meet in person that you met online or who will read what you posted online. Companies now also use FB, etc to make background checks on job applicants, etc.

Heck, I and others rejected many people simply based on their e-mail addresses.

The netiquette rules were put into place a half-century ago as they people already foresaw those probs.

If you want to talk openly there is e-mail, IRC, etc.

What? If I want to talk with people where I have to worry about their feelings or the consequences of what I say, I can just have real life conversations :)

The Netiquette rules I referred to pre-date the World Wide Web by a few decades.

Like I said most people/posters/mods/etc simply don't care or inform themselves.

Said that those rules are the base for most rules on forums, etc and have been used effectively for decades.

Etiquette, socially defined and agreed upon rules, take time to form and spread. Have patience people, Facebook is barely seven years old! If you're talking about 2ch style anonymous boards, you're out of luck.

Zenny11 Thanks for the IETF RFC 1855 info. I had no idea there were actual "rules". very interesting. Now perhaps I should study up before posting again here...

Taka313; WHAT, WHAT!! I DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

I think they already have. People know not to type in all caps as it is considered to be shouting and rude. That is just one example of "netiquette."

"netiquette"

I don't approve of that word.

Nah, sod that.

My ex-wife will be hoping they don't. She will have to find another way to slander me.

Netiquette. I agree in principle, but find the current standards so painfully conservative and safe in comparison to the good old chaotic days of IRC and newsgroups that I am compelled to try to create mayhem wherever I go.

I think the current "netiquette rules"(IETF RFC 1855) already cover them or would only need a small change/addition to do so.

Problem is that many users and site-owners/moderators are not aware of them, and/or they are very often not enforced by hosts, etc.

no.

Why not? Communal sites like Wipedia are already there. I think anonymity means that there will always be a certain quotiant of people who behave uncivily, but "most people" is a very attainable goal.
