I wish but most likely not. The idea interferes with many logical theories.

As I mentioned, time travel and inter-dimensional travel. Should people be able to alter the past, we wouldn't know because we're living in the present. Hence inter-dimensional travel should coincide with time travel. So if a time traveler altered something in the past, they would need to follow the new dimensional time line created where they could experience the alteration of their own making.

All I know is somewhere in those alternate dimensional time lines, I'm happily married to Jessica Alba...rich, and hopefully not a jerkhead. <,<

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I hope not. We could do without someone messing with time. No paradoxes, no creating alternate timelines, none of that please. Messing with the past is certainly the worst idea in a long and depressing history of bad ideas. Oh sure, you could try to change the past for the better. I'll cite Command & Conquer Red Alert as an example of this. According to the game, Albert Einstein travels back in time to kill Hitler, thus preventing WWII. Except things don't turn out that way, and the world gets consumed in an endless cycle of wars between the Allies and the Soviets (and later, Yuri and the Empire of the Rising Sun). A well meaning action, that ended up in endless war and bloodshed. Yes, I know that this is a videogame, but the point is still valid. There's also what one might call the "Final Destination Principle", that someone who was meant to die cannot be saved. Final Destination had that, though it was premonitions not time travel. However, The Butterfly Effect was time travel. Sort of. Guy tries to save girlfriend from dying, fails miserably each time, only way to save her is to spurn her. A terrible movie I know, but you get my point.

If time travel is achieved, there should be a very strict set of rules. First of all: travelling into the past should be forbidden. The past has happened, it has been written in stone, so leave it be. Travelling into the future should be a one-way trip. The present is no longer the present at that stage. You have left it behind in the past. What you consider the future is now the present. Since rule 1 is to stay out of the past, you have to stay where you are. No bringing back knowledge of the future, or you'll influence the past and make a complete mess.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go lie down and take some Ibuprofen. All of this time travel talk has given me a Temporal Headache (that's a term I came up with while watching a particular episode of Star Trek Voyager, in case you were wondering).

Not likely. Our understanding of time doesn't exist. All we have is our perception of its effects. For example a thermometer measure infrared radiation as heat, we measure physical effects based on space used. Energy in any form by the particles produced. A clock Though measures nothing. It is just counting oscillations of cesium atoms or just counting ticks of kinetic energy released from a wound spring. No Einstein proved nothing. An atomic clock on a plane only proved cesium atom oscillations are different, time particles were not being measured. So until someone can actually describe and manipulate a time particle or whatever time really is, there will be No time travel. Even if discovered, relativity still is an effect, time travel relative to who's perspective because to go back or forward implies the existence of something to go back or forward too.

"By now you may think ive been smoking pot and im so ignorant"

No...LSD maybe. Thats quite a paragraph. Theres no more evidence for a quantum conciousness than there is for ID. I think the only fair answer to this question is that its unlikely, but we just dont know.

Time travel? Already here - DMT....

Im a bit controversial when it comes to time travel. Firstly, time is an illusion of the earth dimensions and is linked to gravity and the bandwidth of light we see on planet earth.

Secondly, what we see and feel about time is referenced against a present moment when you see it from an interdimesional point of view Physicists do not yet know what time quotient is governed in the upper more refined dimensions. When I say upper, I mean upper in frequency range and bandwidth range and the gravity rules governing that dimension. They do not understand that as the dimensions become higher to the more rarefied states, time quotient becomes reduced and is tendency to be towards the "present moment" So in the most rarefied dimensions, there is no time at all. All is one and one is all and all is in the present moment. So, this may seem alien concepts to quite a few out there, actually they are not alien, they have been around for along long time on a Metaphysical point of view. Physicists who believe that there are multideminsions out there seem to think that they are parallel realities that have similar basic laws as our earthly dimension...wrong absolutely wrong.. They have the technology already to teleport and time travel objects form one time to another, but they cannot use the same technology to teleport or time travel people + "their souls and auric energies and auric bodies" And even having this technology, it will only work providing they have referenced it to the higher astral and mental dimensions. Time here is relative on earth and is reduced to presentness on the higher dimensions. This is the truth and I believe this. And they also have the big bang theory partly figured out wrong too....yes the cosmos is expanding but its also going to implode too into another cycles of expansion. If it came form something it therefore means there was never a sense of timer in the very beginning and all was present moment and the only thing there was, was a consciousness itself to create a movement and then a wave of sound and then it happened that the movement and wave decided to see polarity...and at this point, it was were the big bang. It happens like this countless times before and it will keep happening like this. And also.... I believe there is no extraterrestrial life on other planets as we see it in the 3 D perspective and we will never find other planets with intelligent life as we know it, but what we wil find is barren rock. However, there are planets which host souls and beings on a different frequency and we will no tbe able to see them as they are on a different dimension and yet, we can still se their planet in 3D as a barren rock. These UFO,s are interdimensional craft, they don't travel as we know it, they lower and raise their frequency to lower ot the earthly dimension. This is why they change colour in apparent so called flight patterns . By now you may think ive been smoking pot and im so ignorant and judgmental and I have no right to say such things, but I will tell you my perceptions on reality. time travel includes soul travel, and consciousness travel and physical body travel. If they cannot include the other aspects of the human psyche in these experiments, they will always be a flops and failure when conducting them on humans. But will successful on objects that do not have a consciousness. And another thing is, consciousness changes and alters DNA and not the other way around. The have got that one wrong as well. Human consciousness is a reflection of the cosmos. These phycists are studying cosmogeniss and in this doing so are unconsciously studying their own consciousness. A bit like the cat chasing its own tail. Question is here , what came first, the chicken or the egg? I would say Einstein had a very accurate view on things. Hawkins view on things is very 3D and doesn't take into consideration the higher dimensions so therefore is of the belief that everything is left to chance instead of grand design. Going back to the original topic of time travel, no it wont happen as we see it or envision it to happen, but we can slow down and speed up time as such in reference to the present moment of the higher realities.
-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Knowing that the faster you travel, the slower time elapses, if you were able to travel somewhere the speed of light for say 100 standard years, time for your would have been very slow (say a few hours) so you could return 100 years in the future for everybody else. However to go back in time, the matter and energy that make up you now was in some other form in the past and that matter/energy cannot take two forms at the same time.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Of course it can and will be done, but depends on what you define time travel as. If travelling to the future is all you want to do then that can be done with relative ease and in the same space time continuum. Going back in time is a bit more tricky and would require an anchor point today to get back to today in the future. Other types of time travel may result in different paradoxes, so probably not what one would like time travel to be.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I time travel everytime I read a book, listen to a song, or watch a movie from the past.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Do you think time travel will ever be possible?

I very much doubt it - but if it were possible I would go back in time to seriously urge Shinzo Abe to rethink his current line of work

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Anyhow... greater mind have and still are pounding in this matter... and though we may know in some depth the different theories that there are regarding time travel.

So.. I am only sticking to what I know and what I imagine could be the probable outcome.....

time travel to the past is not viable... as I say.. as soon as something from the future goes to the past (thus opening a "road" in time)... time will end, since there will be no more past, present and future, because all will be "happening" at the same time.

Yes I could be wrong... I am merely have a college degree in Ago-engineering... so who knows

Question: Is air travel between Japan and the Kingdom of Luxembourg possible?

Answer: It's not because if it were, we'd see Luxembourgians in the streets. Since we don't see any, it must not be possible.

Lack of visitors from the future doesn't mean we'll never develop a method. It could be that we develop a method, but it requires a device at the destination.

Even if you could go into the past you couldn't interact with anything. Imagine you wanted to go back and kill Hitler. Hitler dies, WW2 doesn't start, your reason for travelling into the past doesn't exist so you don't go back in time and WW2 is started by Hitler.... paradox. At best all you could do is observe.

And what happens if Word doesn't crash, and the Universal Hard Disk gets full of Word documents?

Then they just reboot the simulation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simulation_hypothesis#Simulation_Argument

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Think of it like a word document. You create version one of your document. You then make a bunch of edits, and save it as version two of your document. Then you open up version of your document, and make different changes, and re-save. This becomes version three of your document.

And then Word crashes and all your documents fry and turn to gobbledegook.... :-) And what happens if Word doesn't crash, and the Universal Hard Disk gets full of Word documents?

If every change in the past sends you off into a new Version 2 future, isn't that basically the same as saying time travel isn't possible, since the only way you can use it is by shooting yourself in the foot and getting spun off to some new V2 future? So you still couldn't go back to the Future V1 where you started and tell anyone about your time machine, and essentially as far as they're concerned it never happened.

Scary thought - what if someone did come back and get rid of all the really nasty dictators, warlords and psychopathic leaders, and the world we live in now, with Hitler, Pol Pot, Osama Bin Laden, Dubya, Blair, Assad, Saddam, Kim and all the other toe rags, is the new improved Version 2? What kind of place must Version 1 be?

Do not waste your present time in thinking that "time travel will ever be possible"

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I forgot to mention that travelling back in time is one of the plots of ¨Intestellar¨, which I read, will be screening in Japan from the 22nd. In the movie Cooper falls into the accreation disk of a black hole and then. ..well, I will not kill the joy of it. I do recommend this wonderful movie, I became a fan of it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What you say is true Cleo, however there is a theory of time travel that says if you were to travel back in time and make changes, you would spin off a new timeline. The timeline you came from would remain unaffected, but a new timeline would emerge that contains the changes you made in the past.

Think of it like a word document. You create version one of your document. You then make a bunch of edits, and save it as version two of your document. Then you open up version of your document, and make different changes, and re-save. This becomes version three of your document. Version two and version three contain a mutual source (version one), but are now different documents.

The question is, if you were able to travel back to the future, would you end up in your original timeline (version two), or your new timeline (version three). Likely it would be the new timeline, as you would already be in the new timeline having spun it off when you changed whatever it was you changed. But the people in the timeline that you left would see no changes, and their timeline would go on as if nothing had ever happened, except that you would be permanently absent from it, having gone back and then onwards to the new timeline.

So if one were to say travel back in time and kill Hitler, in our past, Hitler would still exist. But a new timeline would exist, and in that timeline Hitler would have been killed off.

If it were possible to travel back in time, and people in the future found out-will find out-have found out how to do it, then they would do-will do-have already done it. And at some point someone will follow-is following-has followed the rules of Sod's Law, creating an anomaly by killing his own great-grandfather before he met his great-grandmother, or altering the whole flow of history/evolution by stepping on some vital bug back in the mists of prehistory, and the world as we know it would pop out of existence. Or we would wake up one morning to find we had all evolved into rodents instead of apes. That hasn't happened, which means it isn't going to happen (cos if it were going to happen, it would have already happened). Or it could mean that time travel was-is-will be-has always been-will have been limited to forward travel, into the future one-way only, in which case we will know-knew-have known-will have known nothing about it. But seeing the way the world is going, who in their right mind would want to go forward in time, with no prospect of being able to return? Shades of HG Wells and the Morlocks.

In short, No. And No thanks.

Haaaahaha! People saying "no" are getting downvoted. Boooo, to our opinions, boooooo!

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

This question sends us to the decoherence state of quantum physics: travelling to the past is possible, but we can not change anything there - just observe. To the future, here we see the double slit phenomena: reality splits into infinite versions, and just one will ¨materialize¨. So, we can not know which point of the probability wave will be the future. Past belongs to everybody, but the future, only to a higher intelligence we are not well aware of.

As others have pointed out, you time travel whenever you fly in an airplane or climb a mountain because of kinematic and gravitational time dilation. Time is passing only an incredibly small fraction of a second faster for those on the ground when at that altitude/speed, but time is passing more slowly for you.

traveling to the future would be essentially equivalent to faster-than-light travel

No, you don't need exceed light speed to travel far into the future. If you just managed to approach light speed and tooled around the galaxy for a year, you would return to Earth to find that a couple of hundred years or so passed while you were gone. Travel for a decade and come back in the next millennium.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Didn't I already answer that tomorrow?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I don't hate my life by any means, but I wish everyday I alone hold the key to time travel.

First, I'd seize the oil rich areas before anyone else could, I'd have created Mickey Mouse and own Disney, either invest in Apple or create the iProducts before Jobs, I would have created the LED, I would... Well, the history books of the world would be 70% about my industrialist "ancestors"!

(egomaniacal laugh) HAHAHAHAHA!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

We are all travelling through time right now.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

In consideration of becoming capable in interstellar space travel, yes it most probably is possible. Nobody knows every single thing about the universe yet. Think of the different types of travel that are theoretically possible. Time travel and inter-dimensional travel are the two most interesting theories imaginable.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Time dilation has proven that an objects can experience different time relative to one another. An experiment using two atomic clocks starting with the same time with one on earth and the other placed in orbit around earth showed the earth bound clock with a slightly slower time than the clock that returned from space. People might not consider this time travel but relatively speaking it can be seen as such.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As long as we watch out for fixed points in time and don't stumble upon Daleks or Cybermen, it should be possible.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Kurt Friedrich Gödel said yes.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No... but if ever time travel (meaning traveling back in time) comes to be possible... that will probably mean the end of time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Whatever you do......don't forget to take the Sports Almanac with you......and be careful of that kid McFly because he'll try to take it off you.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Time Travel......I use to do that when I drank. One minute its 10pm then suddenly its 01:30 and then its the next morning and I am waking up. :)

Man I hated that.....

8 ( +8 / -0 )

If it will ever be possible, it must have always been possible. If you think about it...

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Time travel into the future is a theoretical possibility, by approaching the speed of light - doing so means that time moves slower for the person traveling at these high speeds, and if/when they return to where they started, much more time will have past in the place they started, than for the person that approached the speed of light. Therefore they would be in the future, but with no way back. At our current understanding of physics, time travel into the past is an impossibility. The past has already been completed, and there is no way to go into it. That said, who knows what understanding the future may bring. Maybe we will discover some way around this limitation and find some way that allows us to travel back in time, and not just forward. But at this moment, everything we know tells us that cannot happen.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No, it's not possible.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

No, as it violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics (entropy).

0 ( +3 / -3 )

We could probably rule out single timeline time travel as I'd expect we'd have already seen thousands of time travelers who have come back in time throughout our history. Multiple timeline time travel, who knows?

I'm sure time travel is possible, probably just not in the form that we imagine.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Considering traveling to the future would be essentially equivalent to faster-than-light travel, doubtful in the next hundred years or so. Science is always giving us fanciful ideas without much in the way of actual technology.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Yes. Forward at 1 second per second.

7 ( +7 / -1 )

Who can say?? 100 years ago, today's technology would have seemed like pure magic and impossible. 500 years from now, if life still exists on this planet, I think time travel may well be possible. But policing its usage will be a headache though!

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

No.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Everything we now take as normal - trains, planes, cars, computers, space travel, nuclear power, supermarkets - were once someone's mad idea. So I would not say that time travel is impossible for ever and a day. We know the physics of it so in theory it could happen. Time (pardon the pun) will tell.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

It might already be possible for people in the future. How often have you seen someone acting or dressed in a strange manner and thought they look out of place? Maybe they are time travelers from the future doing research in our time.
