have your say

For those of you working remotely from home, how much attention do you pay to what you wear and your general appearance (make-up, whether you have shaved, combed your hair, etc) when you have online meetings? Have you seen any of colleagues looking a bit disheveled online?

Hasn't changed anything. I'm a slob. I do have a suit somewhere and occasionally dress up, but soon revert to type.

Same with Reckless, I keep the camera off as much as I can unless I'm told to open it. In my experience, people who attend meetings tend to wear face masks and reading glasses (you can hardly recognize them) in video conferences and in my opinion, is actually a clever trick to cover up the lack of grooming you have to do. Personally, I have not had my hair cut since January and plan to keep my ronin look as long as I'm working from home.

For regular work task I don't care much about appearance of both myself and co-workers online. A job interview or meeting with clients may be another story.

The quality of sound and network connections are more important for remote work and communications.

Absolutely dress for the camera. Hair, makeup, lipstick. Collared shirt. Jewellery, earrings, necklace.

Wearing things I have not for years as not in a classroom with chalk. Wearing those clip-on earrings as no fear of losing them.

All this prepares me mentally and emotionally to meet the screen with professional confidence.

Screen off: slip into more casual attire.

This is my style.

I never actually dressed appropriately even when I worked in an office; got in trouble for being tie-less several times. Now, even less appropriate.

Although I might try Ms Yarrow's plot: the makeup, lipstick, and earrings – just to see what they say.

Definitely make up, lipstick and earrings, don’t forget the eye shadow and false lashes, they go so well with the stubble and just got out of bed hair!

I'd do the same as if I would be meeting people face to face; clean body & hair, hair brushed and neatly arranged, makeup, earrings, tidy nails. The only difference is, that I wear more comfy trousers/skirts, as I'd be sitting all day. The bottom half would still look tidy enough to go outside, and matches the top I'm wearing - just in case I need to stand up, go get the door, or something of the like.
