Hollywood is deeply divided over whether to keep releasing new films on streaming services as cinemas re-open from pandemic closures. What's your view?

Go streaming. Its the future.

OR release new films on BOTH streaming and in cinemas and let people decide.

Deeply divided? Doesn't most of the controversy revolve around residuals? Salary and a share of a movie’s profits versus one-time lumps? If that is the controversy, then, speaking as someone outside of the biz, it's REALLY hard to care!

I agree with Skeptical above that it seems to be of a matter of income flow to the actors and studios than a people's choice thing. As Rustom says above, put them out at the same time since many people still like to go out to a movie theater once in a while. (Maybe lower the prices at the cinema a bit, while you're at it.)

considering the situation the world is in right now, just stick to streaming. Once this pandemic lets up, go back to the big screen. I don't see the problem with this. Yes, watching it on cinema feels a lot better than watching at home, but then again, everything has its ups and downs.

Don’t like both of those options… Movie theaters might still be quite a dangerous virus spreading cluster and paying for streaming services doesn’t make so much sense too, if someone is only interested in a few good movies but doesn’t want to pay for the 99% rest full of crap. I’d prefer instead something like an easy to handle pay-per-view service on YouTube or so.

I don't watch a lot of Hollywood movies, but the ones I do watch, I watch on DVD. I don't subscribe to any streaming services and don't plan to.

true artists do not worry about money. They worry about seeing their crafts get noticed.

starving in a garret may be romantic but it's damned uncomfortable!

Streaming services force you to pay for a lot of stuff you have no interest in watching. Doing things at home during a Pandemic is sensible but its bloody unsocial and we all end up with cabin fever. Going to a cinema to watch a film is part of the experience and enjoyment that being stuck at home in the same old place to watch a film designed for a big screen on your little box, just isn't.

Adapt, move on. Do both. Profits for actors should be the same whither it was consumed at home or at the theater, or should be comparable. Bake it into the contract

My view? They don’t make good enough original movies much anymore so I don’t care. A couple I’ve tried to watch recently have turned into dinner movies where we watch them if we feel like sponging in front of the tube. Wonder Woman 1984- on man the people who thought that up, payed for it, acted and directed in it should never make movies again. Kong Skull island was just a waste of time paid for by the MIC.

Last great movie I saw at the theater was Return of the King.

Interesting observations

Skeptical had some good points imo.

If Hollywood also owned all the cinemas and the real estate that they were on, we would probably be seeing a big push in reopening them.

The cash flow has stopped.

New companies are making money from streaming it.

The Cinemas want people coming back. Every time I go I spend as much on getting peeps popcorn and snacks and drinks too.

Can't wait to go back to the Cinema - Nothing like it to watch a big release. I have a very decent AV system at home and still prefer the Cinema. Where is the fun in watching something like the new Bond movie on a TV with a tinny soundbar or even worse on a ipad?

@Vreth: I totally agree. Miss it all from a social point of view to be honest. Convenience is boring, making the effort is what makes life fun.
