no cell phones in exam area...is that so hard? when i take any exams for certs i have to put my wallet and phone in a locker outside of the exam room. it's like those little lockers at the airport or bus stop in the USA.

Agreed, no cell phones or other like appliances. Sign them in and sign them out. No exceptions.

I say go ahead and let them cheat, and then maybe they can figure out why they fell behind China.

Banning cell phones would be ideal but hard to enforce without a strip search at the door. A better method would be to change the format of exams from True or false or multiple choice answers to questions that require essays or a couple of paragraphs to answer. Students would actually have to think about what to write.

Invest in a few more monitors. Make each of them responsible for a particular area of the room and have them constantly roaming that area.

Easier, quicker and more viable solution.

Just install a few Dampers in the exam room that will disrupt the Signals to any mobile device. They are readily available and easy to install and use, heck many restaurants, etc got them installed.

I agree that it would be difficult getting kids to hand over their cell phones - they are too easy to conceal. Zenny's idea seems logical.

Cell phone dampers are quite expensive, especially those with a decent range. I really think extra proctors is the key. And let them know that any cell phone use during the exam will result in immediate dismissal.

Zenny , thats the easy answer, but universities don't like to spend money, only receive.

No cell phones (leave all your junk at the door), BUT, not possible unless they metal detectors, and nobody wants to go there for numerous reasons.

They actually covered those Dampers and spoke to makers that install them in Hospitals, etc this morning on Sukkiri.

I am sure that the makers could swing a deal to lease them for the exam-periods, etc.

meant to say "unless they install metal detectors", sorry about that.

Oh gee thats a tough one.....if your caught with a cell phone your exam paper gets binned.

I (the teacher) see you cheating on a test and it's game over, just like it's been done over the past few decades.

Seriously, why all the fuss? Is it really that complicated?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I agree, why so difficult. You should see how strict they are at a JLPT exam. They cant do it like that?

$154 for a 2G, 3G, and WiFi jammer with a 20 meter range. That would cover one or two rooms, at least.

an example jammer: espow.com(SLASH)wholesale-3g-2g-cell-phone-wifi-portable-high-power-signal-jammer-20-meters.html

With devices THAT portable, you could issue one as part of the proctor's test kit. No need to have it mounted and the school could maintain positive control of the jammer when it's not being used for testing (preventing mischief by students who would discover where it was mounted)

Let them do open book styled exams(Cell phone, laptop, textbooks, etc.) it is more indicative of the real world.

No electronic devices allowed in the classroom, if caught with one you are arrested and thrown in prison for life!!

Ok a bit over the top i know so instead how about your test paper is invalid and you just get a fail. Just like in the good old days before political correctness was rampant through out society.

There should also be a test where kids can use any electric device they want. Some math tests allow calculators.

I think that because this is such a national scandal that the government needs to set up a committee to organize some meetings to propose the potential formation of an official board of inquiry which will be comprised of senior members of the MOE who will then fly to all neighboring Asian countries to assess the situation in the different countries then on return further committees and meetings should be set up to discus ways of formalizing a potential planned approach leading to serious discussions of possible methods of organizing further meetings to insure that this type of thing does not happen again.

There is a certain amount of basic knowledge that is required in college where you aren't running to the internet every minute to supplement your deficiencies. How much internet research are you going to be able to do while a lecture is going on (and still be able to concentrate on the lecture)? The internet will probably answer your question... eventually. Meanwhile the professor is 4 paragraphs farther along in his lecture and you missed that part because you didn't know what "permutation" meant and was looking it up.

An open-book exam only proves you know how to use a table of contents and an index. It has ZERO merit as a test of the course knowledge (well, unless the course was "Navigating the Table of Contents and Index: Exploring the Text").

When outside of an academic setting would you not be able consult a index? Law primarily based on citing case precedent (looking through a ton of law book indices). Accounting, particular tax accounting, is estenially doing the same lawyers do. Psychologist refer to the DSM IV to diagnose their patients and so on.

I've taken test that even though they were open book, unless you had a general understanding of the questions being asked, no amount of searching through the textbook would help. Make questions hard, impose strict time limits and it wouldn't matter how much access to secondary information sources they have, they won't have the time to finish the exam unless they know the course content well enough.
