How do you feel about all the surveillance cameras being used in public and private spaces?

Sorry, can't comment at the moment.Think I'm being watched.

I really don't care that much if they're out in public. I usually pretend to stick my finger in my nose when I spot one on me. I'm never really doing anything to get myself in trouble anyway so they can film away. They do come in handy for post-crime situations.

In one side makes me feel uncomfortable, but on the other side makes things much more safer.

These cameras detain people from doing crimes. I guess...

A lot of these security cameras (and doorbell cameras, baby monitors, etc.) are connected to the internet, often with minimal security, so they can be hacked. That makes me uncomfortable.

Cameras are good as they provide an incentive to wear a mask.

How long till we’re all wearing body-cams, like the cops?

And being prosecuted if they don’t work on occasion?

I am opposed to all surveillance cameras. There are too many these days. From satellites to stores.

‘Private’ cameras: 100% intrusive, unless the business FULLY discloses they are in place.

Private spaces, hell no!

They don't seem to prevent or deter crime, but they do enable some criminals to be caught after the act. However, the Dutch had a project with 300 cameras that were equipped with microphones and software that detected increased voice levels and higher pitch, that could indicate potentially aggressive behaviour, prompting police to investigate. They claim it detected 70 alarms, and led to 4 arrests.

I wouldn't have any problem with them if they were really only used to catch criminals. Interestingly, these cameras always seem to malfunction when the powers-that-be are up to no good....

Everyone pulls out their smartphones @lucabrasi 1:55p, ‘most’ without permission, in every type of public situation, even in small, private establishments, without regard for the other patrons probable expectations of privacy at their own table or booth.

So, WHAT IS stopping people from wearing their own, personal body cameras?

As much as I am fine with them on crime-heavy areas, I always feel iffy whenever I see a camera pointed at me, even if it is privately-owned, it's like being watched by someone while you're naked. I understand the security purposes of this, but where does it end? As another reader said, we have fixed position cameras, dash cams and satellites. Somebody is really keen to watch our every move in a not so subtle way. The most absurd place I've seen a camera is directly in front of a common area sink at a restaurant.

I mean seriously, take the emotion out, Zichi for some reason gets worked up emotionally over issues he has zero control over. Of course, I don't like big brother watching me, but not one person has the answer of how to stop this, and Japan or even the US is not as bad as China, now does it make it less intrusive? Nope, but in China's case, you can't even spit without them knowing about it.

Just curious and not condoning his intrusive behavior @zichi 1:36am but if the circumstances had been, somewhat reversed? Perhaps a crime at the neighbor-doctor’s residence and police needed his footage (assuming this is the U.K. re: “100’k’s of pounds”), could he be compelled to provide it?

Despite the temporary feeling of uncomfortably @Bradley 1:49pm some cameras are beneficial, and potentially life-saving: - Anyone aged 45 & older is recommended for a colorectal screening and then, once ever 10 years thereafter.

No problem, soon they everywhere run out of staff for handling all the growing tons of collected data and photo or video footage. Or does anyone expect 90 years olds to watch surveillance videos all day long? Even if an AI detects something, it will take time until someone gets his rheumatic a** up and some other people go for anything or anyone detected in their EV wheelchair. An illusion, thinking of being capable of handling all that in the near future, also in most other similar countries…

Queen of England still relies on her bodyguard but for those same bodyguard, CCTV is necessary.

A neighbour has several security lights and a camera on their shed facing into my back garden. Unfortunately, I'm not rich enough, and don't have the time to take anyone to court.

Another neighbour has CCTV out front. I'm OK with that. It might dissuade a few burglars and con artists. They installed it in response to me being burgled. Almost everyone in our crescent has been a victim of crime over the last few years.

One downside. Certain raunchy videos that I'm told sometimes appear on the internet will now be very difficult to film as trains and other public spaces get CCTV.

Define "private spaces" ?

I don't have a problem with them because I don't commit criminal acts.
