How do you feel about the decision not to have the emperor and empress visit Pearl Harbor during their visit to Hawaii next month?

I don't really care one way or the other actually.

It's either the greatest insult they could level at the memories of brave Americans or not big deal because they're both pretty old and frail and ailing lately and maybe not up to it. Or somewhere in between. Or perhaps it's something else altogether.

ask them, since it wasn't their decision either

They're not going to end up going to Hawaii either. Swine flu.

Most Japanese don't visit Pearl Harbor when they visit Hawaii.

As someone from the States, I feel removed from this and yet connected at the same time.

If they don't visit Pearl Harbor, they don't visit Pearl Harbor. I don't live in Hawaii, so there's no possible chance I'll see royalty anyway.

Disappointed, but not surprised. It wasnt their decision - it was the Fascist LDP/Soka Gakkai Government`s decision.

I would like to see where you got that information and exactly what it says. Please provide the source and a link if on the internet.

I mean sure we can take you word for it if you were there when one party spoke to the other party.

the emperor NEVER gets to decide on what they do its common knowledge the iha decides for them, you cant separate the iha from the govt, they are the same thing

It's fine they don't visit Pearl Harbor. Let them go where they want to go. They don't need to go on a tour to apologize, by proxy for the actions of his father, for the rest of his life.

US Presidents don't make stops to Sand Creek to honor massacred Cheyenne Indians or apologize to Japanese-Americans forced into Concentrations camp every time they go to California.

apologize to Japanese-Americans forced into Concentrations camp every time they go to California.

No, but congress did officially apologize, and gave a significant sum of money to those that were interred.

But that is apples and oranges, as the internment issue is with the U.S. government and U.S. Citizens.

Pearl Harbor was an overt, deliberate act of war with the intention of killing thousands who weren't yet an enemy. It's very hard to just pretend something like that never happened. But since Japanese style is to turn a blind eye to things like this, and never admit wrongdoing, it is to be expected.

Come on, reality check. If you went to Hawaii, would you go to some stuffy old museum, or catch some tubes? Gnarly waves out there.

Having two relatives that are brothers currently resting on the U.S.S. Arizona, I couldn’t care less of they visited. Regardless, I am sure there are some that might find the issue sensitive just as sure as some might find it absurd that a friend and I picked up two Japanese gals on a park bench in Hiroshima Peace Park late one evening 20 years ago. That my friends, was real diplomacy in action!!!!

It looks like I made a typo as usual. Anyway, I guess I should have just said it is fine by me if they choose to visit.

Generally, I feel as an American it is disrespectful for me to go to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I have no issue with the Imperial Family not visiting Pearl harbor. Whether they have the same reasoning is not an issue really.

Generally, I feel as an American it is disrespectful for me to go to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

what struck me when i visited the memorial in hiroshima was the lack of context they provide. the fact is the bombing ended a long bitter war that killed 10's of millions of people. the bombing is treated as an isolated incident.

it certainly was not.

of course you as an american you feel many things there. but i was surprised i actually felt frustration bordering on anger at the japanese because they chose to minimize their own role in the war. let's face it if imperial japan got the bomb first they would have used it on us. and they probably would have used it on a lot more nations as well.

GDdonkey GDs answer whould suffice. This is commoon knowledge. The Emperor and Empress are only puppets of the IHA/LDP/Soka Gakkai Establishment. The Imperial Family dont make these decisions.
