How do you intend to cope with the heat without turning the air conditioner on?

I intend to employ scantily-clad women to fan me with palm fronds and feed me grapes.

I can't work in a 35 C environment, which actually becomes +40 C due to various machines and stuff. The good part is that our air conditioning is gas-powered, so no problem

Looking forward to the brownouts/blackouts that are coming up.

For the guys using A/C reread the topic and consider if your replies are on or off-topic.

use common 'sensu' = folding fan :)

I'm with the posters above. I have no intention whatsoever of not turning on the aircon. You can bet every penny you will ever earn that as soon as October comes around the heating will be cranked on in all public buildings to a ludicrously high temperature, lest the delicate flowers we live with feel chilly for ten minutes. If we have enough energy to waste in unnecessary heating, we have enough to use on necessary cooling.

When the mercury hits 35 or so, I really fear that Tokyo will be hit by blackouts or brownouts. I have purchased a rechargeable fan that operates for about 8 hours when fully charged. I've also got stocks of water and pouches of jellied energy drinks. There are sites on the web that show current power demand, but I don't know how accurate they are. Main thing, I figure, is to avoid heat stroke and dehydration. Taking siestas until around 4 pm make sense.

I'm not. The air conditioner will go on.

Same here, infact it was on this morning. Living in central Tokyo is just too uncomfortable without aircon and I am confident we will have no power cuts in Minato-ku.

What , is this a trick question?

I started using my ac several weeks ago.

I got my hair cut. And as soon as I get home, I get out of my "cool biz" boilersuit, and into my birthday suit. I have a Vornado which brings my bedroom down to about 30C at night, and sunblocking screens over my balcony window to keep the morning 3am sun from turning my apartment into a sauna. As it is, I usually end up living in a 35C environment with a towel around my neck for a few months...

I like MrDogs strategy

I do not cope. The AC is blasting away as i type.

Yeah, we are using the A/C here. Very comfortable. We are consuming more ice cream these days.

Those gel pads you can stick on foreheads and necks are good, the ones you can sleep on are very nice. I dont find a fan does anything at all. I also find those water aerosolised sprays of mineral water really do cool down the skin.

I have to admit I folded and turned on the aircon midday today. It was just far too hot and I couldnt cope. I can manage at night right now, but whether I will still be able to sleep in August even with towel-kets, gelsheets, and a fan, I dont know.

I also like MrDog's strategy. Almost as good as my strategy:

Make cherry crushed ice. The cherry syrup is a bit expensive but one bottle will make a ton of crushed ice. If you can't get cherry syrup, I suppose lemon or strawberry will do.

"I got my hair cut"

Ha ha!

That would be the heating element of your aircon, I have the same system, cooling uses electricity, heating uses gas.

You people must live in caves like most Japanese. I am on the 4th floor with a huge roof balcony and the breezes are great. I never use the aircon.

Completely on topic. The question was a silly one in the first place. Why turn the ac off? Are you kidding?

been there done that :) http://tinyurl.com/ghettoAIRcon

in trials, it reduces the humidity more than the temp.

It'd be interesting to see what the temperature is inside the executive offices of TEPCO come the peak of summer. Those bastards better not have even an electric fan on.

As for me, went out and bought myself a Cool Magic Softgel mat. Amazed at how well it works! I actually get cold at night with it, and I'm from Canada! Of course, it isn't that hot yet... Just ridiculously humid.

It is simple! Take 2 months off work!

Ivan, I feel like you. Japanese society is ruled over by the "samugari" tyrants, who assure that ambient temperatuers are uncomfortably high all year round.

It should be the opposite -- they can always bundle up if they feel cold, but in the heat we hairy men can hardly work shirtless!

The Aircon stays on, the hell with all the savings, environment and bla, bla, bla. I'm protesting and I promise to keep my house a cool 24C degrees, yeah, I might go to hell, but at least it'll be cool on the way down!

@bass4funk.

How will you power it when the Blackouts are starting up again?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ahhhh, didn't think I thought about that, did you?! I bought a generator just in case! Either way, I ain't gonna suffer this year. I refuse to become another statistic!

I posted a few times already.

Jinbei, small electric fan, added Sudare all round, LOTS of Mugi-cha/Iced Coffee, coolish bath ready for a quick dip.

And, yes, got an air-con but only used it thrice. Got my electricity bill now down to 3.500yen and that is with 2 PC's on 24/7.
