When you don't have the urge to run for the door the following morning at her place when you wake up hearing a little voice say, "Mummy, is this my new daddy?"

Without wanting to appear corny, love is all about chemistry, biochemistry, to be precise. People release certain scents, often called pheromones, that others can detect subliminally. These scents carry information about the carrier's genetic profile that can help the smeller subliminally decide whether they would make a fitting parent. If a couple are sufficiently attracted to copulate, there are other chemical releases that engender feelings of attachment. Often this has nothing to do with personality, giving rise to the situation where someone feels they are in love with someone they don't like. Also, it seems that women have drawn the short straw, in that it is easier for them to develop these feeling of attachment. This bond, linked to high levels of oxytocin, has varying degrees of strength and longevity, which may go towards explaining why some marriages last a lifetime, whilst others fall at the first hurdle. Interestingly, childbirth and child rearing seem to engender the greatest releases of oxytocin, so perhaps the only true love there is is between mother and child.

When I remember her name the next morning. Kidding! Relax!

Uhm.. that's 'stalking'.

I'm glad I didn't fall in oxytocin with Notginger.

:-)

Seriously though, when all the good things you wanted for yourself, you now want for the other person.

I disagree. Knowing you love someone is your ability to accept the things you don't like about them. Love may bring out a person's better qualities, and hopefully it does, but it won't remake them.

Squishy, gooey feeling. I think.

Please define 'love' so we can answer the question more accurately.

And I think Benny Hill would have added a comma...

How do you know when you are really in, love?

when it couldn't be anything else

The ways I know.

I think about her welfare before my own. I cannot imagine anyone ever taking here place in my life. Even when she drives me crazy I love her. She's my best friend. Being with her feels like home.

Passion and scents are fine just starting out. But after years together you will know if love is there or not based on things like my list. Those will make a relationship endure or not.

I've been dating my boyfriend for some years now. In the beginning all my friends wondered why someone like me who has many men at her feet would fall for this man. But I know that I'm really in love with this man. He's intelligent, knowledgeable, kind-hearted, warm and is always there when I needed a shoulder to cry on....
