How do you think Naoto Kan will do as prime minister? What do you think his biggest challenges will be?

Time will tell but give him a fighting chance. I truly hope that he will concentrate his efforts on the many other issues at hand. PLEASE give Futenma a break!

I think he will quit.

His biggest challenge will be to stay in office for more than 8 months....

I personally think picking out ties in the morning can be daunting for a Japanese Premier. Go with more reds and start being a jerk to get things done. Yellows and blues need to go for now.

If he's smart, he won't take the job. Other than that, if he doesn't concentrate on the economy first, he'll find himself mired in the same goo as Hatoyama found himself in.

To be able to walk into a room without saying, "gomen nasai!"

I do not think he will last long enough to get comfortable given the track record of Politicians in Japan.

Pro-LDP Media will be Kan's biggest challenge, otherwise he is a "good leader" unlike Hotoyama who was a "good man !"

In 2 months he'll be having fun having his pics taken, in 4 months he'll get no popular votes, in 6 months he'll age 5 years more than his present age. In 8 months, he'll say ooops, sorry I must leave office. Next PM, please!

Who has been running the country over the last five years while all this has been going on? Anybody, nobody or everybody?

To cut spending and to start cutting the debt. This means to do the unsavory thing of raising taxes but at the same time not killing the economy. Sooner or later this debt has to be handled or our money is going to be completely worthless. We will end up like North Korea whereby the just plunked off two zeros off their currency so if you had 300,000 won it became 3,000 won. Nice! Like to see how that plays here!

Keep putting the sons of sons of former leaders and you'll keep that revolving door spinning every 6 months or so.

Actually try to "lead" as opposed to try to keep everyone happy.

Getting anything done. What has any recent prime minister actually accomplished? I even question the value of Koizumi's accomplishments.. what actually improved?

He will require more blue LEDs in any and every usage possible, if that hasn't already been done

Hatoyama and Ozawa did a pretty good job of poisoning his administration before he got in, so doing anything will be a challenge.

Well, a little early to say how he will do but if his promises end up as empty as his predecessor's, we'll at least have the opportunity to refer to him as "akikan"...

Everything is a challenge, but the biggest one will be to win the election coming up. If he loses big, he will be replaced. Very simple.

His biggest challenge will be to make both the U.S. government and the people against the Futenma relocation agreement happy.

Japan are just lucky they don't print their currency with the prime ministers face stamped on it because the mint pressers and printers would have exploded long ago. I think his biggest challenge will be getting the chance to do what all Japanese prime ministers seem to do first up.....organise a trip to the White House to meet the U.S President.....but will he be in power long enough to accomplish this dream????

There will be a money or girl scandal in his cabinet. The media will focus on it but will ignore real issues such as the economy, allowing the whole governmnet to avoid making decisions.

Given the track record of the past four prime ministers, chances are not very well. His biggest challenge will be to regain public confidence in the government.
