Well the first question to ask ourselves would be "is it the responsibility of airlines to provide the security to passengers or is it the government of the the country in which the passengers board a flight?" Airlines are not security specialists, they are transporatation companies. It should also not be responsibility of the airports to manage security if you really want to do it right. There is way too much hot air going around on this subject and it has such an easy answer which is to put the military in charge of security at any land sea or air port, period. All watch lists (internationally) however long or short should be assimilated and governmanetal security forces should be deployed to check out the individuals and screw (that means the aclu can go to hell) their civil rights.
In the recent failed high jackings from Nigerians, the terrorists were subdued by passengers and not by air marshals. I don't think any more security is really necessary.
Stop flying. Or put in place sensible checking procedures. Some of the current stuff makes no sense.
My guess, impossible to stop determined lunatics like these. So just accept that the odd incident is inevitable (like plane crashes happen sometimes too) and take the risk.
Have a two- or three-foot deep pit set alongside the search walkway so the airport staff can frisk passengers legs and feet without having to bend or kneel down.
First of all, it's hard to stop a lunatic. The Christmas Terrorist was a stupid lunatic with mental problems. Terrorist groups didn't assist this idiot, they probably turned him away. To me he is a copycat or a brainwashed idiot with nothing else to do during the holidays.

Heavily screen males between the ages of 12 - 45 years old.
Were there's a will, there's always a way. Only until the terrorists themselves give it all up, they will always find ways to persue their lunatic mission. It will never stop.
Nothing. You can't stop every threat unless you strip everyone naked.
Really, doesn't everything seem to be working OK? There hasn't been a hijacking in ages, nobody's bombed a plane (though several have tried). In the 70s and 80s these were both fairly frequent occurrences, now they are very rare despite people flying much more frequently.
You can never be 100% safe, and the law of diminishing returns certainly comes in to play. Look at how much hassle is caused by the removal of shoes in the US, and what has it actually done to improve safety?
Each passenger and their families should confin in one block with no access to other people onboard of the plane
Which means that each block should have its own bathroom, food, etc...

And everybody should be handcuffed and a IC chip implanted under skin
Start no-fly country lists. Stop flying to places like Nigeria, Yemen, Iran, Syria, etc. Prohibit connecting passengers from countries on the list from boarding unless they submit to full body searches. We NEED racial and religious profiling no matter how politically incorrect it might be. (Militant) Islam proves itself time and time again to be a danger. I hope the passenger who subdued the piece if (expletive) on the Detroit-bound flight caused him a great deal of pain! It's almost too bad he didn't snap his neck, but then he might wish he had after the FBI works him over a bit!
"stop flying" ?? That's funny. It means they have to severely scrutinize everyone in the airport. It will take every person 4-5 hours to get through customs at international airports. But, I don't mind the idea so much cos I would rather wait 5 hours than end up on a plain with a bomber on it. Nasty!
Since we lack adequate technology, there is nothing much more the airlines can do.
Stop flying, become a pirate hostage and get the swine flu at your local supermarket - our choices are amazing nowadays.
The U.S. knew that the Christmas day attacker was someone to watch (his own father communicated to the U.S. that he was a radical). It all comes down to people, and their ability to ignore "political correctness" and follow their gut. In the U.S. after 9/11, old ladies in wheelchairs were under high scrutiny, but a young muslim man was allowed to pass without question. This was done to prove to the world that we don't racial profile... Dangerous and ignorant, since one can name many muslim terrorist attempts, but none from old ladies in wheelchairs...
For the person who suggested 'Star Trek' technology, one of the episodes of 'Enterprise' (post 9/11) featured a group that simply injected themselves with a substance that activated a chemical within their bodies that exploded. Given the recent approaches (mixing liquids/substances while on board), the fantasy-world of Star Trek is not beyond possibility. If you're willing to become a martyr, you'd probably be willing to have a device planted within your body that would avoid detection.
If a group or individual is willing to carry out an operation, a security work-around will always be found.
It won't be long before all passengers have to fly naked, modesty disregarded. And to stop explosives being secreted internally, every passenger will have to consent to having their a$$ probed. No hand luggage whatsoever permitted and all other luggage to be submitted the day before travel to enable a full examination. Take the train or stay at home folks!
Come to think of it even flying naked would not be safe. Imagine using a terrorist's body as the carrier of a deadly virus, like ebola. Get on a long flight before symptoms start showing and let the cramp cabin and re-circulated air do the rest.

Fire anyone who puts forward a security suggestion that won't actually improve security.

Sorry but how do we know what could be terrorists plots when top USA/UK security personnels have failed to detect. Just pray and board and deplane.

More air marshalls. Well trained, competent security personnel with experience. But I guess that's been done?

More marshalls would be a good idea. A lot more. It will cost money but the airlines are making enough already.

Jack up the prices so high that only the super rich and super-terrorist can afford to fly. Then strip and anal search them all. Viola. Safe skies.
