The west has had to fight Islamic extremism with its hands tired behind its back by political correctness, but if Pakistan falls under the power of the Taliban then the west will have to learn to fight fire with fire. That will mean destroying Pakistan’s nuclear capability before it can be taken over by the crazies. At the moment Pakistan does not have missiles capable of even reaching Europe so they might only be viewed as a regional threat, but those same war heads could always be put in containers & sent by sea to any country in the world & that is a risk we should never take. Once the Taliban have those weapons can anybody see them NOT handing it on to their Islamic brothers? Waiting to see what may happen could end up costing tens of thousands of lives.

The Taliban getting their hands on nuclear weapons actually doesn't worry that much. All regimes, whether it is Iran, North Korea, the Taliban or whoever, have one thing in common - they want to stay in power. Using a nuclear weapon would bring retaliation and the end of their rule.

remove nuclear capabilities.

The West and it's allies better act now, reacting is too late .

It said falls under Islamic control not Taliban control. Pakistan is already an Islamic state.

I don't think the West can do anything to stop it. Look at Afghanistan. Apart from the Green Zone, or whatever it is called, in Kabul, the rest of the country is practically under the control of the Taliban and tribal warlords.

However, I don't think the Western nations, Japan included, should be pledging $5 billion in aid to Pakistan.

Vacate Israel, because the Taliban will not be aiming the nukes at India for very long.

Bomb them into submission.

That would depend on what "full Islamic control" as I have no idea what that means, but presumably they mean something Talibanny.

I thought it was already an Islamic country. India kicked out all the Islams half a century ago.

As the Talaban do not believe in education, who will take care of the nukes they will inherit. I say leave them alone, because when they get their new toys, some of them might decide to try to play with them, and blow themselves up.

There are two choices; A. Kill everyone B. Kill the radicals and invest the necessary time and resources into education and the economy so trash like sharia law and the Taliban won't be so popular. Killing everyone will be cheaper, but the weak willed won't stand for it - both involve long-term solutions that require difficult decisions, so neither option is really feasible.

The West will rect with predictable military force. The West, afterall created this monster when they pushed for "democracy" in Pakistan. Musharraf was the only man wo could control that country to any extent. What we sould get behind is another military dictator strongman in Pakistan. In someplaces, democracy has no place. But then again, I guess the U.S. needs a new enemy...

The WORLD, not just the "West" should be PRO-active, not wait react to a situation.

First off, Pakistan already is an Islamic state. The official name is "The Islamic Republic of Pakistan". We'll assume that JT is referring to the taliban insurgents in the Swat Valley. They've already been given authority to run their turf with sharia law, and instead of being placated, the taliban is emboldened. These insurgents are striking dangerously close to Pakistan's capital.

I hope we ALREADY have mechanisms in place to get Pakistan's Nukes OUT of there if it looks like the taliban or other radical nutcases are in a position to take over. Dealing with it after the fact would be disastrous. I hope we have high level contacts within Pakistan's military, whose lower ranks are increasingly sympathetic to the taliban.

We Need:

1) Preemptive Diplomacy, a deal with the current government to go in and get the weapons.

2) Preemptive Confiscation. Either of the afore-mentioned situations would be preferable in light of the need to verify the location of every single one of the warheads or other devices.

3) If these prove impossible, any and all means necessary to keep nukes out of the hands of the radicals. And yes, this time I DO mean "Napalm and Rockets". Possibly more.

The west is not alone in this. Pakistan has as many as 250 warheads, and missiles with a 4500km range. India, Israel, East Asia, Diego Garcia.. all in imminent danger.

And then there's the possibility of smuggling a device out to anywhere in the world. China's western frontier has its own problems with radical Islam. Australia, Japan and the Philippines would have reason to fear. Of course, the U.S. and U.K. would be the prime targets for taliban revenge for Iraq and Afghanistan.

How should the West react if Pakistan falls under complete Islamic control in the future?

how? nothing..

none of our business.

is it their business how we run our country??

help them get richer. Rich citizens tend to be better informed, then Taliban can have an oposition from inside. Instead of from outside, which didn´t or won´t work.

Isn't Pakistan already under Islamic control? They have the crescent on their flag afterall and the official name of the country is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. What is this question actually asking? What should the West do if the extremists of the Taliban end up replacing the tribal oligarchs of the current system?

Just like they did on South Park during the volcano drills....duck and cover!!Boy oh Boy this world is going to shake at its foundations if they get 100% control.

Those in the West who have supported these elements should be knowing when and how to react. Ordinary people have no idea whatsoever.

Under complete Islamic control

What does that mean? Incorporating elements of Sharia into the constitution, like Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and er... Pakistan? Is the USA under complete Christian control? Is that a worry?

Nuke the poor bastards and blame it on a North Korean rocket.

Shake hand with India and finish it off. That country should belong to India.

LostinNagoya:

I agree. Provide a stable economic environment, a sound economy which allows people to be independently prosperous (relatively speaking) and give everyone easy access to a basic education which encourages a curious and questioning mind. And have a well trained and disciplined defence force which carries a BIG stick.

The Taliban will always be a problem, but with these things in place they will only ever be a group of fringe crazies, a canker on the arse of society.

Prosperity will trump self-destructive ideology everytime, and work hard to crush it.

Appeasement never works (well, historically at any rate).

The question refers to "extreme" Islamic rule, so I think that this clearly means examples whereby a strict interpretation of the Koran holds sway over all law, such as Saudi Arabia and Iran (and previously Afganistan), rather than countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Egypt. I would have thought that very clear from the question,

If such a party does take over, the response will be from India, not "The West".

is it their business how we run our country??

Absolutely not. But it is our business how we run their country.

The Taliban have pretty well proven that they would have no issues with killing as many "infidels" as they see necessary to further their own aims. For that reason it is a matter of self defense for India, the EU and US to have a plan in place to capture or destroy the Pakistani nukes in the event that the Taliban get close to seizing them.

Unfortunately the Taliban know this and since the Pakistani government isn't going to roll over (the Taliban had to pull back into the Swat valley yesterday after warnings from the government) the Taliban will resort to subterfuge to acquire the nukes. This is all the more dangerous as the Taliban will have control of the nukes before anybody knows it.

Unlike NK the Taliban seem to have no issues with dying for their cause. This is going to be a very nasty situation. Iraq might not have been a good excuse for a pre-emptive strike. Is Pakistan?

The simple minds of the naively innocent will bring about the end of the world. Being nice to a lunatic with a gun is the fastest way to get yourself killed. Yes we can give them lots of money (Dane gold) & that way we can help them finance their global terror campaigns, airfares, hotel bills, flying lessons, it all mounts up you know. Not too sure how we go about education though, for religious reasons that might be complicated, perhaps we would be best letting the Taliban run their own schools they seem so good at it & once you have made friends with them they can be so nice, honest.
