How widespread do you think doping is in pro sports? Are there any sports that you think are clean?

Curling?

Probably show jumping riders, not sure about the horses. Any sport that needs strength or endurance will have doping at all levels, more so at the elite end. Victor Conte, the head of Balco labs, who knows a little about doping as he supplied a whole host of US stars, said that at least 80% of sprinters were on steroids. He would know as he was the selling to them!

In some sports, doping is so widespread, its part of the sport itself. Cycling, track and field, weigh lifting and American football are all examples. Even non "athletic" sports have a problem, darts and snooker players taking beta blockers to calm their nerves...

Unfortunately, too widespread. I can remember guys trying to get an edge even when I was in high school - wrestlers taking a handful of NoDoz before a match, cross-country runners using asthma inhalers to breathe better... For pros, too much money is on the line. Doping, however, should not just refer to PEDs. There is also "technology doping" that is getting pretty bad and is making a lot of sports unfair or haves vs. have-nots. The swimsuits about a decade ago is the best example. In the past summer Olympics I read articles about how runners now have metal plates in their shoes that act as springs, wrestling singlets are made out of material that is harder to grip (doesn't absorb sweat from the opponet's hands), swimmers sleeping in oxygen deprivation tanks to increase stamina...it is really getting out of hand. Sports that are clean PED wise might not be clean technology wise.

I think Chess would be an unlikely candidate for doping unless there's a steroid that helps with brain function only. I also think that for as long as competitions exist, there will always be someone trying to get an edge through all means necessary, and this doesn't just apply to sports.

Half of athletes dope to cheat, half to level the playing field

Honestly, probably not. Even sports that are purely mental, there are drugs to help keep you awake or increase focus. Surely everyone here knows people who took ADD drugs to help them study in university.

I am sure it is less widespread in some sports, but i don't doubt it exists.

Maybe e-sports? But even competitors there may see benefit from drugs to increase alertness and focus.

In a narrow sense, forbidden medication etc, yes, curling and chess might be candidates of a doping free sports, but in a wider sense, applying all legal and grey zone medications, nutrition supplies, enhancers, whatever is reachable they are all taking it, otherwise they couldn’t stand the rivaling teams or opponents who take it. So in that wider sense even chess players probably take some special sugars and additives, curlers some isotonic drinks etc, which is not an official doping but also isn’t average peoples’ daily common used nutritional behavior.

Darts might be clean. Can you roid up just one arm? The dart?

I remember someone quipping years ago that for synchronised swimming, it was the spectators who needed be drug tested.

Only dopes use dope.

Perhaps this dawning awareness of how all sports are corrupted will mean more people begin to remove said sports from the pedestals they have put them on...
