I second this! In my opinion, this would be more meaningful than any well-paid and pampered athlete, A-class celebrity, or kamisama forbid, a political bigwig lighting that bonfire.
There are actually two cauldrons planned, one inside the venue for opening and closing ceremonies and one more widely visible at the waterfront. I think the question may end up being, "Which two people?" Perhaps the waterfront flame will be lit by a paralympian?
Ichiro Suzuki is the obvious and only‘correct’ answer permitted here. Sorry @spinning-plates 12:26p. Yesterday’s ‘maelstrom’ of the mascot suggestions may have been deemed inappropriate, at that time. Only the unrealistic suggestions of a beloved, deceased comedian’s ‘ghost’ and a Japan’s IP, ‘fire-breathing behemoth’ stood muster amongst a now ‘threadbare’ list of ‘real’ and ‘alive’ personas.
If it’s going to be anyone, it’ll be a Japanese athlete, either active or retired.
Because Hideki Matsuyama is the Japanese sportsperson currently in the public eye currently, I would suspect he will be the most likely candidate to carry the torch on the final leg of the relay.

The ghost of Ken Shimura to show how stupid having a Covid-19 super spreader event is.
If you don't know who Ken Shimura is he was a comedian and died from covid-19.

It's a well-known secret that Ichiro is going to light the torch, if and when.

@rcch - fully agree. Someone or a group from Ishinomaki or Rikuzentakata or any other impacted place.
Mr Kipling
Who do I think? or who do I know is going to light the flame?
I think a giant fire breathing Godzilla would be cool, but I know it is going to be Ichiro Suzuki.
