have your say

The Japanese government has asked the U.S. about the possibility of allowing commercial jets to use the Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo, given the expected sharp increase in flights to the capital for the Olympics, but U.S. officials have adamantly refused to even negotiate the issue. What's your view on this?

You have to wonder about the IQ of people who are running things in this country.

It's an Air Force base. You can't just have thousands of random tourists land there. It's called security...

I'm surprised the Japanese government would want to expose a jointly beneficial military base to commercial air traffic.

Of course they said no.

Toasted Heretic:

These foreign air bases should be decommissioned, the occupiers sent home and re-purposed into commercial airports.

Simple as that.

This is Japan, not the USA.

Except in that case, Japan would have to massively re-arm and build its own air bases (or use the existing ones, but not for passenger jets). Really as "simple as that"??

A Japan that gladly and willingly signed the SOFA, the agreement under which US forces are stationed in the country.

My view is Japan should have considered these issues BEFORE bidding for the Olympics. Simple as that.

The US response was reasonable.

Why not send the extra flights to the Ibaraki airport? I understood that is why they built Ibaraki

This idea is simply hilarious, like using your batmobile for groceries when your sedan is in the shop.

Too many factors to consider. Will the airlines pay the Japanese government and U.S. government for fuel/maintenance/security/flight-line access? How will the passengers be escorted off base? What are the security concerns? Will they be expected to fly them out after the olympics as well? At the very least the U.S. should discuss options even if the ultimate decision remains the same.
