OK, I always close the lid prior to flushing. Should I then clean the inside of the lid and seat?

I saw a TV documentary one time that showed the plume of bacteria that is expelled upwards when a toilet is flushed, sending bacteria everywhere. I don't care what you do with the seat now, as long as the cover is down when you flush.

Some Japanese toilets are overly automated. When you enter the bathroom, the plastic lid opens like aligator jaws, which scarred me to death on first time. Then, when you start to pee - it closes in the mid of my act...

Put down the lid of the toilet before flushing otherwise you are breathing in particles of whatever has been put down into the toilet….

And, make sure never to go outside, particularly to the countryside where all those birds and animals are peeing and defecating everywhere.

Too much information...

You should always put the seat down before flushing, it’s extraordinarily unhygienic to do otherwise.

Downstairs loo with the washlet and heated seat - lid down when not in use.

Upstairs loo; seat (with non-slip cover) always down, lid always up, door open too, for the cat. She always calls me when she's done, so that I can flush for her and give her a treat.

Tricky question - I guess it depends on the flush. If it resembles a waterfall I'd recommend to put the lid down to prevent a geyser-like spraying all over the seat. In such cases I advise to put the lid up back again and wipe the underside to prevent unwanted particles to stick on your shirt in case you or your guests lean back while taking a dump.

If unsure whether your flush is of the geyser type or the mellow trickle my toilet produces, flush while seated. You will know immediately.

And about seats - after years of shared flats there is only one rule: Guys sit down or clean the whole bathroom every single time. Writing "SIT DOWN YOU PIG!" on the underside of the seat has proved very efficient.

Down before flushing.

@Zichi-san: Glad that anti outdoor fungus paint is working. We have also used it in our Unit shower stall walls and amazing on how it stops pink and soft black mold.

Some have seats and covers. Both can be used to sit on. Our seat has cute warm long pads with rabbits on them. We keep the seat part and cover down all the time. Both covered.

@Zichi-sama: Vinegar is good to kill that black mold. Also consider painting the inside walls of the cmode with outdoor paint specifically to fight off mold. Works rather well. Also good on indoor plastic in damp areas.

Be sure to air out the room until the paint is firm and dry.

@Zichi-san:

We do too, and we both take care of cleaning. Daily actually so that friends, pets and family stay healthy. Appreciate your posts. Always so logical. My hubby thinks the same.

If just for pee, always pull up, otherwise,

Flush

Put down the seat

Squat on that seat (sorry fat people, this Not for you)

Poo

Flush

Wipe out the seat and pull up

Flush again.

“Flush is always a Must”! - Why? Because we have to ‘learn from History’. - For example, look in the “Food” section at what was ‘unearthed’ in Austria this week. - OUR past may come back to haunt us if we are not careful. - FLUSH the toilet after use, animals !!

Don’t want to appear too analYTICAL here but, with more that one in a house, UP or DOWN: FLUSH !! -

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Our house: 1) Toilet seat DOWN: 2) close the lid and then, 3) FLUSH !!

Always FLUSH!!

The current Japanese ‘vegetable men’s ‘movement’ dictates THEY all sit down, regardless of the task as hand. So, their seats would be down ALL THE TIME. (Except, hopefully. for daily cleaning, of course.)

Close cover before flushing, very simple.

But, after flushing a number two, just have a quick peek in case you've left a floater.

Why would you leave the toilet bowl "open"?

For the cat? But no...toilet seat down before flushing is the general rule in my house.

And it doesn't matter with old guys. They might as well leave the toilet seat down and pee on the seat, since they pee on the floor anyway.

Like watching them do you? I'm an old guy, I don't pee on the seat or the floor, perhaps you'd like to watch?

the toilet lid is closed after every use. my grandparents have dropped too many things in the toilet bowl in the past years that we've just decided to close it. But when guys pee, it's toilet seat up of course.

When we bought our place, the previous owners had installed one of those hi-tech Panasonic models that does everything for you bar physically extracting the waste from your internals.

So naturally, the lid has an auto up/down function and the seat goes up/down at the touch of a button. Barely any effort needed to put the seat back down, just push the button next to the flusher.

One first-world problem solved.

Should just be a no-brainer.

Do you leave cupboard doors open?

Do you leave the fridge door open?

Do you leave your briefcase open?

etc, etc.

Why would you leave the toilet bowl "open"?

Always put the toilet seat up before going to the bathroom. After you're finished, put it down before flushing.

The people who don't do this are usually the same people who don't know how to put the toilet paper roll on correctly.

And it doesn't matter with old guys. They might as well leave the toilet seat down and pee on the seat, since they pee on the floor anyway.
