U.S. President Joe Biden is caught between two political parties that appear to be in no mood for compromise. Do you think he can unify the country over the next few years?

There will be no unifying with the GOP. They have already proven that, not even two days into his administration. So it's a moot point.

All he has to to do is clean up Trump's disaster. Which he is already doing at top speed.

If 'compromise' would include meeting the demands of Trump's violent, extreme right wing mobs that want to destroy the democratic elements of the republic half way, then NO.

If ‘compromise’ would include giving up any civil rights and returning to some variation of separate but equal, then NO.

Trumpism and all other radical right wing movements must be resisted. The far right have always been part of American politics.

Trump and his fellow Republicans have undermined trust in elections and voting.

If the US - including both major parties - can restore faith in the republic's democratic features, the far right can be better checked and the majority of the country can move on.

Until then, NO COMPROMISE WITH VIOLENT RIGHT WING THUGGERY.

It is beyond thuggery, PTownsend. The GOP attempted a coup by insurrection. A deadly one. Until that is addressed and those responsible are punished, the GOP has nothing to offer. Ever.

two political parties that appear to be in no mood for compromise.

Trump is threatening to start his own political party. To keep Trump from doing so the GOP probably will again obey Trump and allow him to control the Republican Party.

The GOP can't afford to lose Trump's base: it's currently the minority party. That it recognizes its minority status is one more reason the R's want to restrict voting and undermine faith in elections.

Biden has expressed an interest in unity between the parties. As the leader, this is the right tone to set for his people.

The GOP have decided 'unity' means doing the bidding of the minority, 74 million Trump voters, over the interests of the majority, 81 million Biden voters.

On a purely objective level, the stance of the GOP is unreasonable, which is unsurprising as all of their policies over the the past 20-some years have been attempts at running rampant while accepting no responsibility for any unethical, anti-American, and often illegal actions they make in doing so.

Well, their chickens came home to roost with an insurrection that took over the Capitol, murdered a police officer, stole state secrets to sell to the Russians, and caused thousands of dollars in damages.

And yet, here they are, continuing their campaign of pushing for the desires of the minority over the majority.

I guess they haven't hit their rock bottom yet. And so the cycle continues...

Yay American Exceptionalism.

Fight hate with love, the best way to overcome evil. If we fight hate with hate all we have left is more hate. Example: we’re talking about unity. Stop the impeachment, send a strong message.

As long as the media does not censor his comments or not even show his full speeches or written executive orders, there stands a chance he can make some good changes.

I think age issues including his own is a problem in politics in general, but Joe comes across sincere, and we just have to wait and see.

@rcch

I think America needs to fight hate with Justice in this instance.

Then once Trump, Cruz, Graham and all the other insurrectionists have been held accountable, you can bring on the love.

You can already see that there won't be a civil war, the Qanon followers are left dumbfounded the wind was blown out of their STORM.

Carrying out trials and punishing those found through evidence to be guilty of incitement sends a better message for America to the world than 'Oh well, a few white people got a little excited.'

Bring some Republicans into the Cabinet, and have a national - as well as a global - conversation.

Why are people frightened, and what lessons are there for the WH?

End late capitalism and the pursuit of money and dominion over other nations.

Concentrate on feeding the poor, creating more amentities for impoverished areas, more job opportunities, defund the worst police forces.

Get communities to talk to each other. Reach out programmes between the gated and the ghettoized.

Make English and Spanish mandatory attendance at schools.

Step down after 2 years.

Really doesn’t matter what Biden does, it’s the media that decides what people know about Biden.

Biden has already started moving the war machine back into Syria. Biden has already given big Pharma an early valentines present by freezing Trumps order for insulin providers to pass discounts onto customers. These are not positive notes to Biden so the media will not put it on their front pages, even though war and healthcare are top issues for Americans.

And he’s not really caught between two parties as they’re both the same party.

Really doesn’t matter what Biden does, it’s the media that decides what people know about Biden.

It's the voters who decide what we know. It's the voters who decide whether he stays or goes.

There are hundreds of thousands of journalists out there who carry out investigations into corrupt governments like the recent administration. And, if needs be, the current one.

Many reports end up in the mainstream media.

And what trustworthy media would you recommend?

Am wary of clicking on links which contain anti-Semitic content and/or conspiracy theories, by the way.

Which was how they dealt with the fallout from their baseless invasion of Iraq, and the resulting deaths of 500,000 Iraqi citizens.

No chance ever! Wishful thinking. Though I wish cooperation would surge back.

Joe Biden will do his term and that is it and the GOP will resurge like nothing you have ever seen in the modern times. Its already been arranged and and its not with Trump. The GOP goes young bright and smart as it has learned a painful lesson.

A marginal less than half of the country do not no parts of Biden/Harris. Garbage and disgusting what he has done in just a few days other than Corona.

 "Alea iacta est."

GOP will rise.

We will have the Senate and Oval in 2024. I know it. I belive it.

Biden's a lame duck. Nothing to see here. Lady Gaga can sing to the fat lady comes home with Jenny all they want.

History as shown when sitting president goes for re-election you are not going to have a big internal party fight, that’s a major key, and you’re unlikely to have a big third-party movement; also worth noting that Biden will likely achieve major policy changes from the Trump administration we all know this.

By Biden own hand and with every executive stroke of the pen and reversal.

He takes away taking away our Republican fundamental rights. It will not stand.

It will be his demise of him voted right out of office.

All of this will change and be de-railed and re-written. I wonder if Democrats really understand the monumental resentment and motivation the GOP core and Republican voters are feeling right now from the attacks on our beliefs?

Our core fundamentals are under siege. You think the Obama administration was bad?

Will not go into too much but, this is what's coming.

Deals like the Iran deal, Open borders, reliving and forgiving student debts with no payback no consequences, Cartel deals to let more drugs in the country. Gangs like MS-13 and other coming in. Manufacturing friction in the middle east leading to drone strikes and mini wars. Voter fraud. It is now solely up to the GOP to restore and end the Democratic corruption machine. Once and for all.

Fight hate with love, the best way to overcome evil.

That is what Trump tried for four years, and look how that turned out.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Our core fundamentals are under siege

As was witnessed when Trump's lies-fed mobs encouraged by Trump's fellow insurrectionist Republicans - 'young' Republicans like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley - violently attacked the capitol building in their failed attempts to overthrow the republic.

No doubt the Trump Republicans will continue to do whatever they can using BIG LIES to continue their assaults on democracy. Republicans like Cruz and Hawley PERSIST in claiming Trump lost UNfairly. Big lies have been a key tactic used by the far right since the 1930s.

I think you forget to put a /s at the end of your post.

Biden is too old to cope with such task. I don't say that Trump was good, but  there were a lot of younger candidates for US president.

Radovan Stojanović

Yes. That is the what I am saying and more talent in the GOP up comings then DNC.

Great comment.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

I don't think he can, because the U.S. citizens have been badly divided into two poles over the pass few years. Also the country has fallen into isolation from some world associations. It takes enormous efforts and time to change people's mind toward that of unity. Considering the age of the new president, he will not be able to show his leadership to unify the republicans and the counterpart.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

It's funny how, when the Republicans lose, they want reconciliation, to move forward, forget about the past and want to unify the country. But when they're in government, they don't give a damn about others. When Obama wanted to get that SC justice confirmed, republicans were like, take it slowly, this shouldn't be done during the president's last year. But last year, with just weeks left till the election, they rammed through their choice. Well, let the impeachment go ahead just as fast.

I wonder whether Rafael Cruz will want to impeach his master. Remember, if the fat guy runs again in 2024, Cruz can kiss his ambitions goodbye. You just know he wants to run again in 2024.

Slickgrifter:

more talent in the GOP up comings then DNC.

Yeah, like QAnon believers, a drunk like Matt Gaetz, and others who incited crowds to storm the Capitol. Or a kiddie-fiddler enabler like Gym Jordon. Yeah, 'talent' alright.

As Clinton said, a basket of deplorables.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The GOP will shrink in line with the country's demographic changes. Democrats could go into two camps, moderate and more socialist groups.

The four-year presidential tenure is too short to solve the fundamental social and political divide.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

"two political parties that appear to be in no mood for compromise"

I don't understand why this is a thing. There is a Democratic executive branch and Democratic legislative branch (assuming the parties go 50/50 and VP Harris breaks the tie = Democratic).

People went Democrat this time because they're tired of nothing getting done. They're tired of legislation dying on McConnell's desk.
