My third floor balcony. Kogashi-san in the near distance, the mountains of Nikko in the far distance and Nantai-san backing it all up. Even better when there is snow on Mt Nantai, of which there is none, yet.
The only thing sort of ruining the view is a set of golden arches. But that's okay, I love McD's.
Nowhere in particular. I just go for a bike ride from the city outskirts to the countryside and just take in the scenery while on two wheels. The crisp, cold air in your face, the beautiful red, orange and yellow leaves dancing in the wind, and the crunching of leaves as you go along. It's a simple but nice experience if you ask me. Of course, somewhere special would be nice.
My garden. Its planted for autumn colour. We have several Japanese maples, which all change at different times, which stretches it out but stop us getting a "this the peak moment" photo. My favourite tree is a shiraki, I don't know the English name. It produces the most different colours on the same tree at the same time. For brightest reds, I recommend nishikigi (burning bush) or doudan shrubs.
Nowhere public, that's for sure. Stopped doing it years back after an old man on our train started punching high school students en route to Arashiyama. It was packed beyond belief but the old guy kept pushing his butt outwards to make room for himself, and in doing so kept pushing it into young girls. They rightfully complained about the "pervert oyaji" and he turned around, screamed at them and started hitting them as best as he could in that cramped space. He was hauled out next stop, but didn't help ease the stress, congestion, and general overall horrible experience of it. Plus, you get there and everything is bottlenecked while you wait for people to pose in front of certain tree... when there are HUNDREDS of people trying to pass by.
So, for me, it's small parks as I pass through as I walk to work, the streets lined with ginko trees (many chopped down to make room for... ummm... more air?), or best case sit in a bath at a hot spring that has some within view, preferably a private balcony bath. That's too pricey this time of year, though.

Yamagata-ken, kind of an underrated prefecture but it is always a pleasure to drive there during this season.
Bad Haircut
Agree. Went to Ginzan Onsen a few years ago around early November and it was a sight to behold.
