The temples and gardens of Kyoto are always impressive, but the crowds can put a dampener on things.

Last year we went to Karuizawa, and there were some stunning displays of colour in the Old Karuizawa district, so that would rank as a new favourite.

For me it's a lot more simple. I used to head on top of a mountain road and stop at the summit of it. Just me with my bike, surrounded by trees and their falling leaves of varying colors, and a beautiful view of town. Nothing fancy but it feels a lot more connected.

Gunma's Watarase River is a heaven on earth during autumn foliage! First two weeks of November will be the perfect timing!
