What are some of your favorite places in Japan to view the beautiful autumn foliage?

The temples and gardens of Kyoto are always impressive, but the crowds can put a dampener on things.

Last year we went to Karuizawa, and there were some stunning displays of colour in the Old Karuizawa district, so that would rank as a new favourite.

For me it's a lot more simple. I used to head on top of a mountain road and stop at the summit of it. Just me with my bike, surrounded by trees and their falling leaves of varying colors, and a beautiful view of town. Nothing fancy but it feels a lot more connected.

Gunma's Watarase River is a heaven on earth during autumn foliage! First two weeks of November will be the perfect timing!

Some of the parks in Tokyo have great colours for those unable to get to the mountains.
