A Christmas Carol. I've been watching it since I was a kid. Growing up, I never thought that I could related to that grumpy old man but I unfortunately did.
Of course the best fairy tale movie ever made, Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella, which is in original from former Czechoslovakia. In Central Europe it’s a TV hit for five decades now, every year around Christmas it is broadcast several times and watched and loved by all families and age groups, although it’s only a fairy tale romantic love story and has zero Christmas contents or decorations. You won’t forget the beautiful princess, the beautiful castle (located in Saxony) and also the movies’ soundtrack for your whole life. Give it a try, it’s surely the best you can ever find for you and your children during holiday season.
'The Family Man', 'It's a Wonderful Life', 'Love Actually' and any classic BBC sitcom Christmas episodes from the 1970s through to 'The Vicar of Dibley' and 'One Foot in the Grave'. Plus the Charlie Brown Christmas special, which I used to watch as a child.
(not a Christmas movie but) Ben-Hur; while I was growing up, I remember watching that movie every year during Christmas/Easter (w/ my family); of course now things are different but it’s still a special movie, one of my favorites and imho, a masterpiece. In the final scene, he says that hefeltJesus’swordstaketheswordoutofhishands; a beautiful message(!) and imo that’s what Christmas is all about.
The Santa Clause immediately comes to mind. It's a family favorite and is watched every Christmas. And though not Christmas themed, Happy Feet is also something the family watches during the holidays.
Other movies that make the rounds include:
Rise of the Guardians
Arthur Christmas
The Polar Express
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Christmas With The Kranks
Elf
Home Alone
Klaus (a recent addition but will surely become a classic)
“ I recall Ben Hur being the quintessential Easter movie on German national TV in the 70s and 80s. I pretty much watched it every year or close to it. TBH, I never was into religion (and still am not) but to me and as a result: Ben Hur = Easter must watch
And yeah, hands down a classic Hollywood masterpiece. “
Someone downvoted our comments, can you believe this(?); anyway, I used to go to church every Sunday with my parents and my mother is a serious Catholic so, even if I’m not that religious anymore, religion is still part of me and my life and Ben-Hur (1959) (just an example), is an extremely special movie for us.
I get what you folks are saying about movies that were always on at Christmas when you were young. For me it was 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. Wonderful movie.
