Changing human behaviour that only accepts ‘perfect’ looking fruit and veg is out of the question sadly.

Simply Reduce the amount of quickly perishable food for sale.

Educate customers that a "Sorry we're sold out of that item" sign doesn't imply a lack of care for the customers.

It's business - demand & supply - and if that makes some Customers are King folks feel slighted, then so be it.

In Japan the disgusting amount of waste needs to be drastically curbed.

Yes, it’s difficult to do more if already much has been done. in fact , many limits are reached already. Like we all can’t save so much more energy or electricity, because we all are doing that already for years, also the convenience stores can’t further order less food or increase the pressure on the employees to buy unsold goods. Have you recently been at several cs? There aren’t anymore bento boxes or sandwich packages to choose from, you have to be lucky if you even find one kind you usually dislike and wouldn’t buy if the shelves would be filled completely.

sell items that are near or just a few days beyond their consume before date at a discounted price like around 70%, you can be sure that people will still buy them if they are still edible and won't make them sick. In a bread store that my family frequents, people would actually wait until the store's closing time to buy near-expired bread at reduced prices, and they are still good. Also, how about giving away no longer sellable food items to employees? As someone from a third world country, food waste is a luxury problem and squeamishness is your hindrance to preventing foodwaste if you ask me.

Nothing. It is a consumer issue not a point of sale issue. Too many people toss out perfectly edible food.

People saying this, please think it through.

If perfectly edible food were just to be given away come certain time... wouldn't the number of people just expecting that increase? because why make the effort to earn some yens if you can get it for free later on. And isn't it proven to be better to teach people to fish, rather than just giving free fish? Do people living in the street should stay that way and be supported to stay that way? or rather encouraged and supported to having a better living condition?

Surely there is a time for compassion and free-giving, but that and a system of just giving, is a very different monster. It cannot be so that people become dependent and reliant on it for survival. There has to be some accountability of sorts, some verifiable effort to move on or move back and a commitment to do so. Which a convenience store is not prepared to follow up and control.

Could forward the leftovers to organizations that help children. Children by definition and moving on, meaning growing up and have every expectation to end up sustaining themselves. So it's an easier scenario. I thonk.

Nothing. It is a consumer issue not a point of sale issue. Too many people toss out perfectly edible food.

This includes perfectly edible food being thrown away directly by the convenience stores, without being ever sold to the costumers. This means that there is something that can be done by the stores to avoid this, an example that has already been proposed is to reduce the amount of food that is being offered, this would mean less food would end up ending up being unsold, but it would also mean that costumers would unavoidably have to deal with times where the food is already sold out.

Make a law like in France that bans supermarkets from throwing food away. Unsold food gets given to charities like Good Neighbours Japan. Watched a YouTube video just yesterday about food banks in Germany. A lot of the food being donated was coming from supermarket chains like Lidl and Aldi.

Deliver the unsold food to homeless shelters, women's shelters, orphanages etc. Also, I don't know if it's introduced in Japan yet but apps like Too Good To Go and Flashfood are great in helping businesses sell excess and unsold food at discounted prices.

Agree with many posters who say feed the homeless- that should be a priority.

If the question is of how to make a profit, they can create a discount section where food that needs to be sold within 48 hours is reduced by 2/3rds of the price. Better to sell it at a discount than throw it away.
