What do you think about the whole 3-D thing, with PC and TV makers rushing out new models, and more films being made in 3-D?

Couldn't care less, don't need or want one.

Technically interesting. But there is no content - films - yet which would make it worthwhile to invest. First all the effect guys are jumping on the bandwagon and during that time I can wait for the equipment to come down to normal prices...

Don't care or need 2d Blu-Ray is fine for me.

I saw a magazine in the conbini the other day that had a 3D porno DVD included. Never been particularly fond of 3D movies, (only saw avatar in 2D) so it'll be a while before I spend any money on this stuff.

It's going to be the same problem that has plagued film anytime there's a technological innovation. Most of the effort is going to be put into showcasing the new toys and less into actual stories. It was the same thing with CG when it became economically feasible. It was a long, painful two years from Jurassic Park to Toy Story 1. It'll be the same with 3D. Viewers will have to wade through a lot of dreck for the next couple of years before the industry finally gets out of the honeymoon stage and starts focusing again on better screeplays -- at least until Smell-O-Vision gets perfected.

I remember when I was kid i was wishing for video calls...now that we have them, I hardly ever use it. I could prob say the same for 3D. As cool as it sounds, the technology is just not good enough. It felt kind of fake or like i was in a theme park when i wathced avator last year.

For me just a money-making scheme to cash in on the latest fad.

As other have mentioned not enough contents there and I doubt that there will be in the future.

Add to that the extra cost/investment needed to partake of it and is it truly worthwhile.

Where is the benefit from seeing news-casts, TV-series, etc in 3D, contents done specifially for 3D viewing(action movies) will still be limited in the future.

Just becasue we have the technology and capability don't mean it will be useful or widely used.

Look at Japan, many japanese are tired of the gadget over-loaded phones and rather stick with older models.

Besides Avatar, then all the other stuff labeled a 3D movie has essentially been made in 2D and then modified, so it never really made sense to make a big fuzz about the 3D thing yet. The big production companies saw that Avatar was a big hit and they had to cash in on it. Im sure things might be different in 5-10 years, but its simply too early to really talk about 3D being successfull.

I hope it doesn't catch on for about 10 yrs, I just bought a HD widescreen and don't want it "outdated" too quickly.

I agree also bought 2 new HD TV's for me and my son.

Also the USA has already upgraded to digital so many people might be ready to switch appliances again.

Japan is still getting ready for the digital cutover(same as UK, etc), so most people won't be willing to replace their recently bought HD TV's and Recorders.

So acceptance of that technology will vary globally, as it will mean replacing a technology and appliances that cost a fair bit with newer technology at an increased price when the old stuff will still be good for years.

Just my view.

Engineers had to play with something. I guess TVs and PCs are almost at the end of their evolution!

Next ones up are mobile phones. We'll see if we can have "Help me, Obiwan-Kenobi" in real life!

Would never buy one unless paid to do so, and then I would try selling it. This is a gimmick that proves only one thing: There's a sucker born every minute.

Apparently the push towards 3D is driven by the movie companies as the 3D format is tougher to copy and allows for more copy/pirating protection.

The days are long gone when we get new technology just because we can do it

So strap in and be prepared that support for older formats will soon be dropped.

Recession?? What recession!!! Wouldn't making a 3D film cost a bucket load more to make than conventional methods?

I watched about 30 seconds of 3D TV at one of the Stores near me. I will have to say that I could hardly see investing in something that makes me feel a little woozy after about 10 seconds!

Well, I haven't mastered the 3-Rs yet. Will worry about the 3-Ds later.

3D is nauseating to say the least. The home theater versions are a crock. It only works if you are sitting directly in front of the screen and at a specific distance, so if you and your family don't mind sitting on each other's lap in the center of the room then it is the gimmick for you.

Yes, very much a gimmick. Maybe they'll be refined somewhere down the line, but 2D films and TV are OK by me. Heck I even watch b/w films!

However, there will be bandwagon jumpers, but I feel that this is not going to make people dump their current TVs (unless they need to make the move from analog to digital), but I still think it'd be the wrong choice.

I also feel the same way about Blu-Ray - videotape to DVD was a great leap in quality of sound, video, features etc.

But the leap between DVD and BR is, IMO, not worth the effort. YES it is better in a number of ways, but not so earth-shatteringly different that I feel I need to go in that direction...although some clearly think they do.

I'm a consumer, and I like new gadgets and innovations, but I'm getting to a point that the so-called 'innovations' are coming so rapidly they're not so impressive, but they require substantial financial investments.

Disagree with me if you will, but there are some marketing bandwagons that are so patently obvious and insubstantial, and the current 3D 'boom.' is one of them.

lame. I have seen the TV demos in the stores. It was nothing speical at all. Avatar was cool, but I woulndt want to watch everything in 3D all the time. I have very bad feeling this is going to set the indusrty BACK not foward. Its going to create a great divide. Instead of making TV better in other ways compaines are going to pour money into this. They could be making paper thin OLED TVs. I would rather a 100 inch tv I could fold up into my backpack and take out where ever I wanted.

It's a fad. It will be gone by this time next year.

I agree with "thepro",it's just a fad and won't last. It's just a way for people to make money.

I like it, but is to expesive for my budget, maybe I can afford it on 2 or 3 years.
