Somewhere I bought or was given (can't remember) a record by a group called
Paracoccidioidomicosisproctitissarcomucosis
It's not all that good.
There are 3 group names I like quite a lot because they are very good weird names
Barenaked Ladies
Bowling for Soup
Jimmy Eat World
I can't wait to read other group names. Creativity starts there. (Doubt that? The Beatles. A great name leading to hundred of "different spelling" named groups. (The Byrds). The Beatles actually means something, other than just misspelling random things.
But my favorite is: (Moderator, I'm only just putting the name in. Not trying to offend. It's a great group's name, that's all).
All of the curious band or artist names I know seem to be Japanese bands or artists with English names. The ones that I’ve bothered to listen to so far include noodles (they’re awesome), Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her (they’re pretty cool), World’s End Girlfriend (he’s awesome) and the currently well-known Little Glee Monster (they are awesome).
Also a big fan of Little Glee Monster. Porno Graffitti was one of the first Japanese bands I checked out after hearing 'Exit' as a theme in the Jdrama 'Taisetsu na Koto wa Subete Kimi ga Oshiete Kureta'.
A quick scan through the music folder...
Angerme. [A combination of the French words for angel (ange) and tear (larme) rather than 'anger' and 'me'.]
Band Ja Naimon! MAXX NAKAYOSHI. Apparently it means 'we are not a band!'
Beyooooonds.
Bump of Chicken. [Translates literally from Japanese as 'counterattack from the weak man'.]
Glim Spanky. [Good retro sound]
Hump Back. [Translation of a Japanese phrase for a back like a cat, rather than scoliosis.]
KinKi Kids. [Formed under Johnny & Associates. Relates to the Kinki Region. Just don't Google it too often.]
Mr. Children.
Rev. from DVL. [A 'revolution' from a group called DVL (Dance Vocal Love). Best known as a platform for Kanna Hashimoto.]
One of the strangest names of a band is Sadistic Mika Band. Japanese band. Great name, too.
The Old Grey Whistle Test footage of them is really good.
My favourite Japanese performer name is a very minor reggae singer from years ago called "Little Chibi".
For non Japanese, Pussy Riot is a pretty good name. Half Man Half Biscuit too as suggested above. Among major bands, the story about Ringo Starr naming Led Zeppelin is funny. Motley Crue the name is probably better than the band. Speed punk and thrash have some gloriously OTT ones, Extreme Noise Terror, Napalm Death, Slayer, etc.
Having scanned CD racks backalong, with only Japanese bands being printed in Romanji,GLAY and T-REX(no copyright?) spring to mind.
I was lucky enough to work in a record shop from the tender age of 12,so was exposed to Throbbing Gristle,Ozric Tentacles and went to school with Aphex Twin,so there's that.

Japanese band Pornograffitti. Great music but, uhm, unique name.

Japanese band Pornograffitti. Great music but, uhm, unique name.
Also happens to be the name of a great funk-rock-type album by Extreme.

Not really strange, but two favorites from my college days in Atl: Screaming Cheetah Wheelies and Kathleen Turner Overdrive.
I never got the '90s alternative trend of naming a band after some ramdom inatimate object: Cake, Filter, Sponge, Bush, Tool....
BackpackingNepal
B'z
Number Girl
Ogre You As*hole
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant

The Meatmen, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Dead Kennedys, Loose Joints, Crash Test Dummies and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I must be getting old. I haven't heard of most of the names listed here. From back in the day...
The Kinks
Buffalo Springfield
Creedence Clearwater Revival

Bump of Chicken wins the prize for me among Japanese bands.
Atarashii Gakko no Leaders is more intentionally bizarre, but it still deserves an honorable mention.
Strangerland
Kinki Kids made me laugh when I first heard it.
Haaa Nemui
A Flock Of Seagulls
Garbage
ClippetyClop
Agreed. I often order this at KFC.
Super Beaver played a gig near my house recently. Lots of cool girls walking around with it plastered across their chests.
Jimizo
Half Man Half Biscuit
Strange name but superb band.
Strangerland
I laughed just reading that.
In the '90s, Insane Clown Posse was a good name. Everyone's used to it now, but the first time I heard it, it sounded crazy.
Jimizo
Brilliant mane.
Strangerland
I see what you did there!
Mocheake
Hide with Spread Beaver was good. When my girlfriend (now wife) asked the meaning, I told her. She chuckled.
ClippetyClop
'The The' were quite a good band too. ザザ.
Asn't were 'Living in a Box'. Who had one hit, called 'Living in a Box', from the album 'Living in a Box'.
I think it was a cardboard box.
Why were Swing Out Sister so popular in Japan? As was Scatman John?
Jimizo
James was a silly name for a band.
Haaa Nemui
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Scissor Sisters.
N. Knight
Always liked that band

Moonraker
Brainticket. And their album Cottonwood Hill has to be heard for all-round weirdness. No way in the world it sounds like 1971.
Mocheake
Forgot Buck-Tick. I think they are still around. Also, Bobby Jimmy and the Critters.
